A lot of people who have herpes, especially men, may only have a handful of active outbreaks their entire life. You're always contagious, just moreso during outbreaks.

One in sex people in the US have genital herpes, so if you've balled more than a few chicks, chances are you either have it or have been exposed. And I don't think that 1/6 of the population just turns celibate.

If you don't have an active outbreak, you're not going to know sans blood test.

There are tons of bugs that people have that the immune system keeps in check.

If you have a cat, you're almost guaranteed to have toxoplasmosis. The vast majority of Americans have CMV.

If you had chickenpox when you're a kid, the virus exists in its latent stage in the dorsal root ganglia of your brain, and if you're unlucky, will reactivate and give you shingles later in life.

This.

And if you're really unlucky, the virus breaks out along the nerves of your face, instead of the chest/back which is more common. And it leaves a nice divot-like scar on the inside of the bridge of your nose.

And then if you're REALLY, REALLY unlucky, you have to go to the doctor 3X a week for a month to make sure you haven't spread the virus to your eyes - because you could go blind if it does.

**** shingles.

Which is also where the mouth herpes virus hangs out between outbreaks.

It's actually nearly guaranteed that you'll have shingles later in life. I think it's somewhere around 75% of all people 80 and over will get shingles.

As well, because of the immunizations that kids now get against chicken pox, the virus isn't being circulated in the general population like it used to and your body's resistance to the virus starts to drop. That's why there are more and more people in their 20's, 30's and 40's who are now getting shingles where they didn't see it until people got into their 60's, 70's and 80's when their resistance to the virus was lowered because of a naturally weakening immune system.

However, once you get shingles, your immune system gets a boost on it's resistance to the virus and you'll likely never get it again.

I know.

I got chicken pox p.II this summer.

There's a vaccine. I don't know how effective it is, but it has to be more effective than that for it to be recommended.

It's not a vaccine in the sense of a children's chicken pox vaccine where those immunized kids will never see chicken pox or the subsequent shingles. It doesn't prevent the reoccurence of chicken pox/shingles in adults, it just attempts to boost your resistance to it much in the same way that you would if your kids showed up with the pox one day. It doesn't guarantee that you are not going to get it in the future.

I can live with that explanation. The vaccine is less effective as one ages, so I'm sure that 75% figure is pretty accurate.

It's about 50%.

Also, the term "the clap" for gonorrhea comes from the French "clappoir," which means brothel.
