I think you bring back both Crow and Collins on potential versus cost alone.

Finnegan will start in the minors, if for no other reason so they can manage his innings. AA or AAA doesn't really matter. I assume they'll treat Zimmer the same way.

They'll have to go find someone. I would think starting pitchers would be chomping at the bit after watching our defense and the size of our park, to go along with the success and the fan support. We still aren't New York or Boston, but we're a hell of a lot more appealing to free agent pitchers than we used ot be. Or Christian Binford wins a spot in the rotation. You're just looking for a 5th starter (assuming everyone is healthy).

Would Pablo Sandoval be too expensive (DH) for GMDM?

Just browsing a quick list of free agents, I'll throw Brandon McCarthy's name out as a Shields replacement. He wasn't good in Arizona's bandbox, but in New York this year and Oakland before his Arizona stint, he was pretty good. Big ballpark and good defense in KC would serve him well. He's coming off a 2 year, $18M contract...should be affordable for Glass.

Kev is right... I think the young guys will start in the minors unless someone blows them away during spring training. Knowing what Dayton has learned the last couple years, he's going to find someone who can eat 200 IP. If that's not his #1 priority, I bet it's #2. Need another guy to eat innings with Guthrie/Vargas.
Good thing is maybe this team won't lose free agents who take less money to play elsewhere. Especially with this defense. |

Not enough has been said about Duffy missing from our post-season rotation. He was our best starting pitcher during the regular season, and it's been hardly mentioned outside of this board. The thought of nursing Vargas and Guthrie through 4-5 innings doesn't come up if Duffy is pitching. If he's starting Game 4, does it still go down that way? I don't think so.
Duffy would have started if healthy |

Yep, this just crossed my twitter feed.
Danny Duffy had a cracked ribcage. Yost was going to use him as our #2 starter for the playoffs. The Royals were insisting that his arm and elbow were fine, so they weren't necessarily lying, but the cracked ribcage that they kept quiet about was going to make it impossible for him to start, and limit him to maybe 1 or 2 innings.

I think everyone knew Duffy wasn't right, despite all those "Why does Ned refuse to start Duffy????" posts.
When before the Series Duffy and the Royals were asked about his health and they all responded specifically, "My/his shoulder is fine," that pretty much confirmed there was something else going on. Speculation was groin or back, he just looked uncomfortable out there. I was hoping we'd eventually find out sometime during the offseason. Thankfully, we did. |
