Alex Smith stretches the field less than every other QB in the league. Literally. You cannot win with a guy like that. So it's not just the lack of yardage. It's that Alex is consistently at the bottom in: YPG YPA YPC TD That is not a recipe for success.

Not completely disagreeing with TK but Russell Wilson's passing yards per game is not an entirely fair reference because of what he adds in rushing yards. Particularly this year.

You want your QB to be able to pass for a lot of yards in a game, but you do not want him to have to pass for a lot of yards in a game. It is safe to conclude that you want your QB to be able to pile up a lot of passing yards when the need arises and the ability to do that is going to be reflected in his career ypg. There is zero evidence that Alex falls in that category. He has to have an elite defense ala Ravens or Tampa in their SB winning years to have a prayer of winning a SB. We don't have that defense and with the aging of Hali, the aging and injury of DJ and Eric Berry's cancer, we are further from having that kind of defense now than we were a year ago. |

And big average ypg QBs > low average ypg QBs every day of the week and 10 times on Sunday.

I'm still not arguing any of that. I'm arguing total yardage is overrated. You're missing all kinds of context. Roethlisberger averaged about 200 yards/game passing his two Super Bowl winning years. Eli averaged about 200 his first Super Bowl year. Russell Wilson averaged about 200 last year. Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers actually posted two of their lowest total yardage outputs as a starter in their Super Bowl years. Peyton Manning is a passing yard machine, but he only averaged something like 250 with 3 TD and 7 INT the year he won the Super Bowl. Joe Flacco had a career postseason average of 121 passing yards/postseason game before turning into a monster for four games and winning a Super Bowl.
It's not unimportant, but I don't think it's as much an indicator of past or future success people think it is. Football is a funny game. |

When the top 31 QBs in career YPG have won 15 of the last 18 SBs and your QB is resting at 64 it is not "a funny game" at all. You are fundamentally screwed.

And I never even argued about Alex Smith. I don't think he's played well enough this year. You are a little too obsessed about Alex Smith.
Of course the funny thing about that is he has been a pedestrian regular season QB, yet has gotten into two separate playoff shootouts with HOF caliber QBs and slung the ball all over the field for a bunch of yards. |
