To what? You're still going to end up with a division winner with a losing record.

Unless you stipulate that just winning your division no longer grants you an automatic bid- that you have to be 8-8 or better.

I believe there is an idea floating around that 1st and 2nd seed get home field throughout and a bye, after that it is best record seeding. In this case Carolina would be the 6th seed in the playoffs despite winning their division. It would also discourage teams from sitting their starters in the final weeks (even though the NFL mostly fixed that by scheduling divisional games at the end).

The Patriots suffered a similar fate in 2008 when they finished 11-5 and missed the playoffs while the 8-8 San Diego Chargers won the AFC West. Although New England had the identical record as Miami and Baltimore, they lost out on the division crown to the Dolphins and the second wild-card spot to the Ravens based on conference records.

From those stats, I do not see a problem with it. Win your division.. It is perfect how it is now.. If every team played every team, then it would make sense.. Hell I would be down for it if all games played were conference games. But now, a division that is decent could go up against a really bad or really good noncon division and swing their wins by +/-4 which is huge..
