Made the postseason 10 times in the last 14 seasons.
Only 1 losing season since 2000.
Reached the World Series 4 times since 2004 and won as many championships (two) the past eight seasons as it did from 1965 to 2005.
Made the NLCS 9 times including the last 4 years 2011-2014
Three million attendance? Take it to the bank.
65 post season wins since 2004. 22+ wins more than any other team.

Lynn would likely have made more than that in arb. The Cardinals get security by protecting themselves against arb increases while building up good faith with Lynn, and Lynn gets security even if he were to Garcia himself.

Shurzer contract is 7 years 210 million... with 1/2 deferred for years 7-14...doesn't that mean they will pay him 15 million a year for the next 14 years. Including years 7-14 when he's not even playing?

Mozeliak is absolutely on point to do this. You save yourself maybe a million only to strain your relationship with the player. It's penny-wise and pound foolish.

Yeah, he had no choice. The death of OT still ripples out through the Cards.

If we have OT and Miller maybe we could have traded for an upgrade at CF. Now we just have to hold our noses, cover our eyes every time he throws the ball into the infield. Don't get me wrong, if he can hit .300 his weak arm is tolerable.

They also have Bourjos and conceivably Grichuk to platoon w/ LHP up. Also, it's a possibility that Piscotty could show further development. Adding Heyward for what we paid is a boon, too.

In a perfect world, Taveras gives us six years of elite production in the OF, but it's also possible he could have ended up like a lot of overhyped prospects that under produce at the big league level (Mike Moustakas). We'll never know. By getting Heyward this year, at least we know that we are likely to get elite production from what was the worst part of our team in '14.

Thats the part that sucks. The missed chance to see greatness develop. But, like you said nothing is a lock. He could have been Rasmus II.

I think we only have a 2 year window so I'm all for getting the rental. The Cards have done a good job of signing their rentals that perform and letting the under performers walk. We will see if Heyward steps it up this year.

I know that Heyward is an upgrade in RF, especially defensively, but I just don't view him as "elite." He can't hit left handers at all.

Well we could pinch hit in the 7th and put Bourjas out there for defense.

That wouldn't be a defensive upgrade. Heyward is the best RF in the game.

Bourjas is a good defender. We can't keep a .200 hitter against a LH in the lineup all season.

Bob Nightengale has a big article on USA Today that a Hamels to St. Louis deal only gets done if Martinez is part of the deal. Hamel's wife is from Jefferson City and graduated from Drury in Springfield. Hamels isn't quoted in the article as saying he loves St. Louis.

It looks like Martinez is going to blossom this year. Why make the trade.

It's a roll of the dice: a known commodity with a high price tag for a prospect with an elite ceiling and considerable bust potential.

I don't think I'd do it, because I worry about all the innings on Hamels' arm.
