Congrats!

From the experience of being the gap kid (though I'm just half of yours--11 years younger than my closest sibling), the first couple of life stages he'll see you more as another adult and less as a brother; but when you both get older that'll change. I'm good friends with my siblings now that I'm in my mid 30s and they're inching closer to 50. I started to see my siblings more as actual siblings once I started to move beyond my teenage years.

It seems more like you'd see them as aunts and uncles if you never grew up with them. I guess you have parents in common and perhaps some principles in how you were raised, but I would think that the parents would change after 10 or 20 years, so even that would be somewhat different.

But what do I know about it? I have one sibling who's less than two years different in age.

Well, in my gap situation, I came pretty much right in the center... 11/12 years between me and my sibs, 12 years between me and the start of the grandkids.

On the one hand, I sometimes felt like an only child, on the other hand like I was a big bro to my nieces and nephews (4/5 of which are out of high school, and two married)...

It's hard to describe how it feels, b/c it's out of the norm of what a lot of people experience, yet it's also my "normal". I can tell by watching others my relationship with my sibs is different; but it's also closer than friend or aunt/uncle. Same is true with me and my nieces and nephews--it's almost more sibling like than normal.

Us gap kids are weird, but it's also fun (at least when you have good older sibs like I do)...

My parents had 2 in their early 40s. Boy and a girl, 31 and 30.

I'm 44, I couldn't imagine having a newborn now.

Meh, things go through your mind (perhaps a little like when you're having kids at 18...), but there's a LOT more upside to it than risk, so it helps to keep you young. And it sure as heck makes meetings with 24-year-old elementary school teachers kind of fun.

It's all good, I just find working with kids very much more awesome than dealing with parents and all their Mama-Drama. It's odd, the longer I work with 50-somethings the more I realize that 10-somethings are often cooler, but the excuses are pretty-much the same...

That's cool man. New life is a beautiful thing... Go for it man, he's your brother, but you can be so much more than just the average older brother. Have fun with it and be the best big brother ever...

Congrats to the whole family.

Be a good older brother and teach him about Uncle Charlie before anyone else does.
