Justin Houston Contract Rumor...

Yeah, yeah.. Bleacher report.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2...ey-from-chiefs

Says Justin Houston wants a JJ Watt type contract from the Chiefs. Watt signed a six year 100 million deal with Houston.

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/houston-texans/j.j.-watt/

Those numbers actually seem fairly reasonable, assuming Houston keeps at his trade. Probably ends up being a little bit less guaranteed, but I could certainly live with that salary cap hit year-by-year.

@JasonLaCanfora: Chiefs and Justin Houston still working away at a long-term deal. Could go down to the wire for the franchise player

That's the ideal scenario for Houston. Backload his contract with a bunch of mega base salaries that boost the salary value for decoration. Then plan to renegotiate a twilight contract after he hits 30 after the chiefs have leverage (Houston age + less dead cap).
I think you can get away with dumping salary into 1 year on the end, but it gets harder and harder to do that as the signing bonus increases (especially if you want to try to add a 2nd 'fluff' year).

Houston, as pretty much inarguably the best OLB in football, has the kind of leverage he needs to secure a pretty handsome signing bonus. If that's what it takes to get him off the tag, it's going to be harder to push salary into later years that you never intend to pay.

I disagree on this. I think Houston wants the money. I don't blame him.

No, I haven't discussed it with him, but that's my opinion based on what we do know...

Anyone know of a reason we can't offer him a lot of that guaranteed money next year when we have a ton of cap space?

And someone else being a FA shouldn't be the reason. There shouldn't be a player on this team we keep over Houston...

Not really. It's a smart play to absorb as much cap when you have the room to do it so you can pay off the dead cap.

He will definitely get that guaranteed money over the first four years. I'm think most of it would come in this year and next. Maybe as high as $20 million next year alone.

That's my point - the market is 'the money'.

Houston can ask for Watt money from KC because if he hit the open market, he'd probably get it.

He's not asking for more from Kansas City than he'd be asking from anyone else. In fact, because of the leverage afforded KC by the franchise tag, there's an excellent chance they'll get him for a little bit less than he'd make on the open market if they're willing to get extremely aggressive with the signing bonus.

To act like he's going to overplay his hand and demand a 10% 'Chiefs tax' to stay long-term with Kansas City is just silly. No, he's demanding a lot of money to stay because that's his market value. There's nothing wrong with that.

The fact he hasn't walked away mad is a good sign. At least they're somewhat close.

It doesn't change my opinion but it keeps the dream alive for a few more hours anyway...

Yeah but, the smart thing to do would be for Dorsey to wait. Everyone knows he's not going to duplicate what he did last year. If he doesn't want to take what you are offering now. offer the same deal in March and it will probably look pretty good.

There is no reason to sign him now unless he is really cooperating and wants the fair deal.

I don't think that's happening now.

I'm suggesting that if he plays this year without a contract he isn't coming back. He won't want to come back. We'd THEN have to overpay after pissing the guy off and I don't see that happening either...

I still disagree with the 'ton of cap space' argument that keeps getting tossed around here - y'all are gonna be really surprised when that vanishes like a fart in the wind before the Chiefs can even dip their toes into the FA marketplace.

That said, no, there's no reason not to do that at all. That's what Watt originally did in his deal, IIRC - his first deal was actually frontloaded in a manner that allowed the Texans to absorb some cap in a year they weren't as competitive and then ease the burden in later years. I think they ended up restructuring it to get some extra years on the back though.

My point being that the Chiefs have already made a $13 million hole in their payroll structure for him - there's very little utility in trying to reduce that in the name of pushing salary back. If anything, giving him a better base salary this year would put that much more money in his pocket now and make him that much more willing to sign. Then you could do it in year 2 as well, though if you've paid him that much up front, he now has less incentive to bust his ass in later years of the deal when he may be underpaid.

The best way to get a happy, productive player is to just treat the man fairly. The Chiefs don't have to **** with his contract to do that. Nor do they have to capitulate, give him whatever he wants and sign him to some absurd franchise killer like Suh got.

If both sides are being reasonable, a deal will get done.
