True but there is still over 2 runs difference in their ERAs this year. Thats sort of significant.

I am outraged that our #5 starter didn't win an 11:00 AM road game against the defending Cy Young award winner without Gordon, Zobrist, Cain, nor Perez in the lineup on a day in which our bullpen allowed 4 runs and 6 hits before recording an out.

Yeah...because they pull Young after two times through the lineup.

Think about the posters who don't like Guthrie - COMO, Prison Bitch, BWillie, Halfcan, kcchiefsus. That should tell you all need to know about the player.

Well maybe Young for 5 and Guts for 4 as the goal for every 5th day?

Guthrie's job is to give us a chance to win, and he absolutely did that today. He obviously sucked again, but he kept it together through five innings. Had Kluber not been dominating us, we could have handed a 3-2 lead to the bullpen after 5, and Guthrie would have been in line for a win. It was pretty clear that we weren't touching Kluber, (especially with the dogshit lineup we trotted out there), so Ned tried to get a few more innings out of Guthrie.

If you expect Guthrie to go out and dominate, you are going to be disappointed nearly every time. That's not who he is, and that's not what #5 starters bring to the table. 5 innings of 2 run ball is something a team with our bullpen will take from a fifth starter every time.

Then you need a sixth "starter". That creates roster issues until they expand in September.

Yep, Yosted.
Seriously, he should be pulled after the 5th no matter what, period, end of story. With the bullpen, most guys don't go past 6 anyway on this team.

Not necessarily. We are winning the division either way. We can win it by 14 games with a depleted bullpen, or we can win it by 8 games with a well-rested pen. I'll take the latter.

Well, I mean if you are really trying to win the game, you pull him after 5. I don't take it for granted that the division is won yet.

Right, but that's not Ned's philosophy, which is why so many people think he mismanages the pen. If you look at each game in a vacuum, obviously you play all of your best players, start your ace, clear the pen with your best relievers at the first sign of trouble, etc. In reality, you have to keep players fresh and pick and choose when you go for it. There's a reason jockeys don't go to the whip right out of the gate.

Today's game was a terrible matchup. Barring a collapse by Kluber, we weren't winning. Yost decided to rest two of his most important starters and hope for the best. Once Kluber came out dealing, Ned was content to let Guthrie go as long as he could and rest the bullpen as best he could. Had we scratched across 2 or 3 runs, Guthrie wouldn't have seen the 6th inning. It was pretty obvious that a lineup with Rios, Infante, Butera, and Orlando wasn't going to be able to touch Kluber once it was clear that he was on his game.
