  • Reached the World Series 4 times since 2004 and won as many championships (two) the past eight seasons as it did from 1965 to 2005.
  • Made the NLCS 9 times including the last 4 years 2011-2014
  • Three million attendance? Take it to the bank.

I don't like Martinez going back out there for the 7th inning. He's not been on and what happened to keep his innings in check to save him for the playoffs.

Just got back and watched the last few innings - tell me what the 'book' on him is.

2 weeks ago you could kill him with soft stuff away from lefties. That pitch he hit off Locke into RC for the lead was the exact same pitch that David Holmberg shredded him with just a week or so ago. I've never really seen him show a weakness in (which actually surprised me a big given his height).

He's just a sound hitter. If you throw him crap, he won't swing at it. If you throw him strikes, he'll battle you. There's nothing particularly terrifying about him as a hitter, but I really wouldn't want to face him with runners on in a key spot either.

He and Grichuk are just polar opposites as hitters. An alternative way of looking at it is that they're very good complementary players; put those two guys in the same lineup and they can do a lot to cover for each other's respective weaknesses.

I'd still really like to see the kid hitting 2 for a bit. This isn't your 'standard' rookie - he came from a baseball factory at Stanford and has been known as a poised, polished hitter his whole career. Even in 2014 when his power vanished, nobody thought his approach had faltered. I think he has the wherewithal to do well up there.

Situation: We're only 4 up in the loss column and a win tonight is HUGE. It sets up the rest of the series so that the best case scenario for the Pirates is to gain a single game. It's a big big ballgame. With Cishek being an unknown still, Maness being someone who may be susceptible to the Pirates big bats and with Broxton being an inflamed hemerhoid; a literal pile of human feces - well Martinez gave us the best chance to get through the 8th with the lead. The 7th I won't even debate - sending him out there with a pitch count in the 80s is a no brainer.

Stressful pitches: He didn't have many through the last few innings. You know that stressful pitches late are what cause injury and Martinez wasn't really throwing them. He was pretty much in command there.

Admittedly it's easier to say in hindsight but Martinez had some serious shit out there tonight and when the game is that big, I have no problems asking for another inning from him.

Seriously, that 2-seamer he throws that runs to his armside is one of the 5 nastiest pitches in baseball. If it's the one where he throws it at the black on arm side on the back of his 4-seamer (where it dives out of the zone) and a lefty even puts the damn ball in play, the Cardinal infield should let it go past them out of respect for the hitter.

Dude, every time I read this thread I think the Cards must have finally hit a losing stretch, I then check the standings and see they've gone 7-3 in the last 10.

This has been a sanctuary of bitching and misery for the whole season (not unlike KU BBall repositories, really).
