Assuming the health of Yadi and Carlos:

Position Players:

1B: Piscotty
2B: Wong
SS: Peralta
3B: Carpenter
LF: Holliday
CF: Pham/Grichuk
RF: Heyward
C: Molina

Bench: Grichuk/Pham, Garcia, Adams, Cruz, Reynolds

That gives you two lefty bench bats, a backup for third besides Garcia, and right handed power off the bench. The one thing you sacrifice is speed.

If you only want one lefty on the bench, then swap Bourjos for Adams, but that's dangerous.

Pitchers:

1: Martinez
2: Lackey
3: Garcia
4: Lynn/Wacha

Pen:

Long: Lynn/Wacha
MRP: Tuivailala, Cishek, Maness
Lefty: Lyons
Setup: Siegrist
Closer: Rosenthal

Of course, that won't happen. Tui will get bumped for Broxton, who is dying to blow a playoff series, and Matheny will keep nine in the pen at the expense of his bench.

I like this but I just don't see any way that Matheny leaves Jay off the playoff roster. So one of those names has to come off your list.

Also I think Bourjas will be on the roster. for late defensive help and speed. We need to protect a lead in the bottom of the 8th. We need a run to break a tie late. Put him on first and hope for a gapper just like this week.

Which I can understand that approach at least over Jay. He has no business on a playoff roster.

Again, I like your roster but Matheny will make sure that Broxton and Choate will both make the playoff roster.

And now with the loss of Martinez, do you need more long relief other than Lyons? We are down to 4 starters. What if we have 2 early meltdowns in a game? Even if you give up, you still have to have someone throw the innings and you don't want to turn your bullpen for the rest of the games.

I hope we don't lose him for most of next year too.

I don't get gambling with a young cornerstone of your pitching staff. We didn't need him to win the division or make the playoffs. He told you he was sore. Why not be cautious? And then after you saw a couple of pitches that looked awkward as hell why not pull him. Man if I was a pitcher in STL and get hurt, I'd be worried.

Baseball needs to find a way to rest these pitchers so they don't flame out before the playoffs or hurt themselves.

Like I said a month or so ago, the postseason rotation would shake itself out. I didn't want it to happen like this though.

The math looks good for us. We win today. We just have to win 1 in Pitt.

No matter if Pitt wins all their games besides the 1 against us, we just need to win 1 out of 3 in ATL to clinch.

Holliday looked good running. He has obviously got his timing back at the plate. That is going to be a big boost for our offense. Peralta is hitting again. Wong looks to be coming around. Carp is back on track. Piscotty continues to rake. I'm a helluva lot more hopeful about our offense after the last week or so.

Probable Matheny line up
