He was essential to us winning. He won several games with his bat, There is no way to quantify how a good defensive play can stop momentum or turn it around. But even if you call BS on that, can you call BS on WAR?

Look at his WAR. 6.4 for this season. 6.4 is a damn good season. Top ten player in the league level.

Worth it or not for a big contract is a separate question. He has been good for us this year.

This format sucks. We are the SECOND BEST team in baseball and get to play one lousy game in the playoffs.
I have a hard time buying that argument in the era of the unbalanced schedule.

The Pirates played the Cardinals 19 times this year. 12% of the Pirates schedule was against the Cards. They had every opportunity to settle it on the field and they didn't do enough.

If you can't win your division, you shouldn't be guaranteed a playoff series - I don't care how good your record was. I recognize that they would've won every other division, but they controlled their own destiny w/r/t winning the Central and in the end, they just didn't win enough of the head to head matchups against the Cardinals or the Cubs.

This is much MUCH better than the old days where the wild card faced no penalty at all for not being the best team in their division. There should be an added incentive to being the best team in the division over 162 games and there wasn't one until the play-in game was put in place.

And bad news, Bucs fans - if you can't get it done this year, your window is closing up on you. You're not as young as people think you are, the reinforcements have largely dried up on the farm and the Cubs are charging. By the time the Cardinals age, the Cubs will have blown past both of us.

No team has won 100 games in 2012/2013/2014. It's been a while. And it took all of those wins to beat your team. You had us worried until that grand slam. Ive got nothing but respect for your team and wish you the best of luck the rest of the year...........except when you play us.
Whereas I hope Arrieta shreds you guys like wood through a shredder because I'm really tired of hearing how unfair it is that the team that couldn't even win its own division isn't given the same advantages that the team that could got.

Dude, What Pirates pissed in your cheerios?

I think it is unfair. Just because its better than what was doesn't mean a better system could be put in place.

Why not Epstein's idea? Play a doubleheader on day 1, on what is now a travel day play game 3, if necessary. No extra days of waiting for the division winner. The WC's are further punished by maybe burning 3 pitchers before they face the Division winner. They may have to play 3 games in 2 days and travel to the division winners city.

That increases the chance that the best team emerges from the WC game and further punishes them for not winning the division. Teams will pull out all the stops to take the Division.

We were 9-10 against you this year so let's not act like you guys blew us apart.

We will finish around 4 games behind you and second best record in BB, not 12-15 games behind and squeak in with a weak record.

Your division record sucked which is why you didn't win the division which is why you are a WC.

You had a shot, you blew it against the NL Central. Self inflicted don't blame anyone else.

BTW what was your record against the Brewers?

Do you think the Cardinals win the division without Heyward given everyone else being injured?

He is just trolling at this point. I ****ing hated Heyward for 3 months.

I have pretty much conceded he is going to get paid. Maybe a bit more than he deserves but he is like Carpenter, a guy who's value is measured in multiple aspects of his game being really good, none of them alone really outstanding but combined adds great value.

Take another 6.4 WAR out of the lineup? We may not have won the division and been in the wild card.

Any Cardinal who felt comfortable that they were going to win the division until Hayward hit the grand slam has not been watching this team close.

2nd best record in baseball. They gave us all we could handle this year.

Another part me not minding if the Cards give him a bit contract is my completely not researched perception of how big FA's have busted right away when changing teams (many of these guys that come to mind are a few years older though). He already produced with STL so seems like the risk of him at least not crashing immediately is much less.

You're right - we didn't detonate the Pirates by any stretch.

But as has been noted, nearly 1/4 of your games were against the 2 teams you needed to beat to win the division and you were below .500 against both of them.

I'm not necessarily speaking directly to this circumstance, but rather generally. In a situation where the unbalanced schedules have teams playing their own division pretty much every week, I have no problem being pretty severe with the team that doesn't manage to win that division outright.

I don't have any serious problems w/ BRC's plan, but I'm just going to say it's a different approach rather than a more 'equitable' one.

You're absolutely right, it was in question to the very end.

The Pirates had it on their racket in their home park and they sent Charlie Morton to the bump.

That's a Pirates problem, not a system problem.
