ST. LOUIS • In a trade that was as much about finding Tony Cruz an opportunity as it was to get a return on their long-time backup catcher, the Cardinals sent Cruz to Kansas City on Wednesday morning for a teenage infielder.

The Cardinals acquired Jose Martinez, a 19-year-old Venezuelan who spent this past season in short-season rookie ball with the Royals.

Cruz goes from backing one catcher who rarely takes a day off to another, Salvador Perez, who openly talks about emulating Yadier Molina's game. They each won a Gold Glove Award this past season.

Martinez hit .246 with a .296 slugging percentage in 63 games of rookie ball.

Dombrowski is going to be paying $52 million/year to Price and Porcello. That is insane.

Whats with all the 3 years escape clauses? Why are teams handing these out to everyone?

If he turns our to be a dud, your on the hook for the whole enchilada. But, if he outperforms the contract, you are out of luck and he cashes in again,

Because the players want them, and in FA they have the leverage.

I get that for Grienke/Price level but for Upton? Kazmir? Kennedy?

Rosenthal was on MLB saying this will be the standard contract from now on.

It will be for any player that has the ability to demand it, yes.

Boras first did it with that !@#$ing Drew contract and honestly, it's taken even longer than I'd worried it would for that to become commonplace.

Truth be told, those deals would almost always keep me out of the market except in very rare cases. They take virtually all of the upside out of a long term deal for the team.

Elvis Andrus is the best example of why those contracts are insane. The deal Andrus signed had nothing but downside for the Rangers from the moment it was signed. Now they're stuck with him.

I've seen reports that he wants to go back to NY. What a dumbass for going all the way to Seattle. I get the ass ton of extra money, but these guys are also competitive. NY got lucky there

It's hilarious. These crazy deal just shoot Chris Sale and Jose Quintana's trade value up.

yeah, all this money being made by MLB has to also flow down to the players. This is just the new deal with money. Where Holliday got $17 million/7 years in 2009 is now $25 million/7 years.

If Grienke got Cain/Escobar then Sale should get that much or more. Be a quick way to get long term building blocks for your Sox.

Now info coming out from many different places that the Cardinals offer had a lot of deferred money in the deal. Boston's had none.

IMO it always works out well for STL. Ya may not always win a WS but you're always good. I've always wanted the sox to model themselves after STL. I want a personnel guy from STL along with our GM Hahn who has done a decent job rebuilding us. Shit just doesn't go our way lol. We get Melky, he sucks, we get LaRoche and he sucks. We get Samardzija and he's the worst pitcher in baseball. Adam Dunn a few years ago and he hits under .200 and 11 HRs.

Some questions I have about STL:
Matt Adams. I've seen some Sox fans that wana swap LaRoche for him. Now I don't know what the value of Adams. But it was a curious idea.

How is my boy Yaddy doing? I've always love Yadier Molina since he first came in the league, he and CarGo are my favorite non White Sox players.

How healthy is Matt Holiday going to be for this season?

Thanks

Ya Sales value is just crazy because of his age, contract and play. Put him on a contender and he wins a Cy Young.

Jose Quintana is intriguing. Nabbed him from NYY off waivers a few years ago and now one of the most underrated pitchers in baseball. He's had like 30+ no decisions since joining the White Sox. In his first 8 losses last year he had run support games of 1 0 1 1 1 0 0 1 That's just awful for the guy lol.

Most Cardinal fans want to move on from Adams.

Yadi is showing his age. He doesn't get to balls he use to get to. Still better than most but not other worldly anymore. His hitting is down. He still makes a huge difference in games because of the way he calls a game and manages the pitchers.

Holliday should physically be fine. But, he is also starting to show his age.
