I really enjoyed the reboot. It's flawed. There are some real cringe-worthy moments but it's a lot of fun and I'm sure will get better on repeated viewings.

But whether or not one likes the movie, it doesn't detract from the originals. Just like you said. The original doesn't disappear.

There's one thing that really frustrates me about the re-boot.

It clearly exists in the same universe as the original ghostbusters yet completely ignores the fact that they were ever a thing.

Couldn't there have been something of a joint re-boot/sequel? That would've been pretty interesting to me. It doesn't have to be a 'where are they now' episode focusing on Venkman and Spangler or anything, but if you're going to try to say that the movie is in some way paying homage to the classic, shouldn't there at least be some kind of through-put that's more than just ham-fisted cameos?

Sure, I guess. I'm not sure that they're intending for this to be in the same universe as the originals, though. It seems pretty clear that the original never existed in this movie. The references are just fan service. And most of them are pretty silly. I did like Weaver's though.

Would a reboot/sequel/passing the torch sort of thing have been more interesting? Maybe, maybe not. I do like the idea of that kind of movie. But that's not the movie they made. And the movie they made is good, so I'm down.

I'm a huge fan of the original film and I certainly don't feel that way. Nothing about this felt like a **** you to anyone at all to me.

Nah. That didn't even cross my mind until I saw you guys posting about it. I thought it was a great lowbrow joke. Appropriate to the tone of the film and maybe one of the best "crotch hit" jokes I've seen in a while.

My opinion is that Judd Apatow has completely and utterly jumped the shark.

While his early films, like Anchorman, 40 Year Old Virgin, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Talledega Nights were uniquely funny and entertaining, pretty much everything else he's done, whether it's film or TV, has been well below average, IMO.

Trainwreck, Anchor Man 2, 5 Year Engagement, This is 40, Bridesmaids and Get Him To The Greek were nothing short of blech for me.

No, but he did produce them, which is actually higher on the food chain that writing or directing.

It was his idea and funding that made those films happen.

He set the whole thing up at Sony for Feig and passed it on because as I mentioned earlier, he couldn't get it to work with Seth Rogan and his crew.

You didn't like Get Him To The Greek, eh? I actually thought that movie was hilarious.

As for the rest, spot on. This is 40 was as 'head up your own ass' a movie as I've ever seen. It's amazing that the same guy that made Sarah Marshall could generate that thing (Sarah Marshall holds up great to this day).

Actually, I think he revealed his 'truth' in his CiCGC with Seinfeld a couple weeks back. His life's work was getting Freaks and Geeks to air. The rest is coasting on LA rays and the adulation of industry types.

He's a child of the 80s who fulfilled his dreams early, meager as they were.
