It wasn't Chris Jones, it was that if you really think Jones is a player, you just take him in the first and leverage the value of the player option to save yourself a shitload in the long-run. Agents are digging their heels in on franchise numbers now that they've gotten so high. The franchise tag isn't going to be much of a benefit for teams going forward. So if you can't get guys extended early, you're stuck fighting in the market for them. One way to help get that extension is the threat of the 5th year option (see Fisher's deal, and Fisher's deal was even harder because the 5th year option for him was more than twice what it would be for a late first rounder). The trade down failed.
