Chiefs release KeiVarae Russell

Rand Gettlin-I'm told the #Chiefs have released defensive back KeiVarae Russell. Special teams numbers game. Super talented player. Likely to be claimed.

We can speculate all we want, but that is what they produced for us.

Moeaki had a long history of injury and was overdrafted (just like McCluster, Arenas, Jackson, Baldwin, etc. and so on). He was a 6th or 7th rounder.

Brodie Croyle couldn't read an NFL defense and was quickly out of the NFL. You can't blame it on coaching when the Chiefs were in 1st place with Damon Huard at QB with a 4-3 record but after he was injured, the Chiefs lost every game and finished 4-12.

The following year, Tyler Thigpen beat him out with Chan Gailey at the helm, who's had success as an OC across the league but none with Croyle (Jets, Steelers, etc.).

Still no information has leaked about why Russell was cut so quickly. O came across this article talking about him today. This is what it said.

It's still a mystery why the Chiefs were willing to cut a player they spent a third-round pick on this year. The 22-year-old previously explained to the Kansas City Star that he had trouble getting comfortable with the team's defensive scheme. Whatever the case, Russell is adamant that he doesn't know why the Chiefs cut him beyond it being a football decision.

"That’s how the league is," Russell said. "It wasn’t a character issue. They can eliminate that. I never got into it with any coaches or anything. It had nothing to do with anything. I wasn’t playing bad. It was just a football decision."

Whatever happened with the Chiefs, that's in the past now, and Russell feels confident he'll last with the Bengals.

Hm. Flatly denying he's been in any legal trouble.

I was convinced that's why we cut him.

This is super, super puzzling.

I call bullshit. You don't just cut a 3rd round pick for no reason. It's more telling that he thinks he wasn't "playing bad".

If you really want to stick the knife in we gave a 4th for that ****ing pile of shit, whoever thought that was a good idea needs to die in a fire of a Carolina reaper tree, while chugging antifreeze and fireball.

I don’t know when that’s going to be, but I feel if I work hard enough going against these great receivers we have, the great quarterback we have, the way the defensive system is, we need guys."

He sounds like an epic dipshit, IMO.

He wasn't "playing bad" but it was "football decision".

What in the name of **** is that supposed to mean?

Sounds to me like the Chiefs expected their 3rd round pick to be able to show that he was able to play meaningful snaps.....and that didn't happen. He apparently doesn't know why they cut him. Nothing legal. No character issues and it wasn't because he couldn't play.

What a ****ing idiot.

So, he didn't get cut because he played "bad" but it was a "football decision".

He thinks he can get on the field with the Bengals but doesn't know when that will happen and apparently, the Bengals "need guys".

Since we don't seem to be hearing any "leaks" about why we cut this guy, the more I'm of a mind to think that our coaches simply felt that we had better CBs on the team with as much potential growth as Russell. Someone had to go, so they simply cut the worst CB on the team. Clearly, a draft fail, but at least they didn't "double down" on it by keeping him around over someone they liked better despite the draft position.

Not sure how smart the kid is but once in a while the jump from college to NFL is too much for some of these IQ challenged guys. It's a pretty complex system in the NFL and if a guy just doesn't get it and is always out of place or lost, what can you do but cut him, admit it was a mistake, and move on.

It sucks cause we burnt a third on this guy. That's really bad that he was cut so quickly.
