Andy Reid shuts down your Chiefs QB controversy talk

http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2016/1...ntroversy-talk

by Joel Thorman Oct 31, 2016, 2:44p

You know Andy Reid was going to stand by Alex Smith and that’s what he did on Monday when facing the press. Reid has been doing this for a loooong time so he let reporters have their fun for a few minutes and then he shut down any talk of Nick Foles playing in front of a healthy Alex Smith. Will it work? I guess it depends on how well Foles plays this weekend ... if he plays this weekend since the Chiefs doctors contend Alex actually doesn’t have a concussion.

Check out this exchange between Reid and reporters this afternoon.

Q: You were asked whether you had to cut back the game plan when Foles came in and you said no. Did he allow you to expand the game plan, maybe do some things that you couldn’t do with Smith?

Reid: No. Alex, I’m not sure we realize how good he is. We’ve opened this thing up further than maybe we’ve ever opened it up. He does a tremendous job. It’s a shame he didn’t have a chance to finish off the game plan because he would’ve had a ton of success with it. Not to take anything away from Nick. We didn’t have to cut a thing out for Nick coming in. That was a win-win for both guys. To think one would’ve done better than the other, I don’t believe that. If Alex would’ve been in, we would’ve done the same thing.

Q: You guys his four passes of 30 yards down the field. That’s unusual for you guys. Was that because the way the game was going or because of who was at quarterback?

Reid: I think it was part of the plan. That was all in the game plan. They would’ve been called. They were right on the first 15. They were coming up so whether it was Alex in there or Nick they were coming up. A couple of them formation wise, there was a little confusion on the formation and guys popped open.

Q: Does Foles give you more capability in that area?

Reid: No, I’m not even sure I like the way you’re going with this. Alex can do all the things that need to be done in this offense and do them at a Pro Bowl-caliber level.

Q: Is he your quarterback when he’s healthy then?

All I'm getting out of this thread is Nick Foles is better and has a higher ceiling, but Alex Smith has brought more regular season wins than the Chiefs fans have seen in a while. Of course it was ALL Alex Smith. (And a shitload of screen passes to Jamaal Charles) But what if Foles makes this team 7-0 instead of 5-2 because he hits receivers deep like its going out of style? You guys forget this defense can be quite dirty at times, why not risk more offense in conjunction with that? How many more playoff losses until we write off Alex McShiteater? Foles ran this offense like he was born to in his first damn game with them. Receivers are saying feed me, but Alex can't provide.

Which WRs did Foles hit deep? I know he hit Hill deep on a badly under throw ball that Alex Smith would rightfully be CRUSHED for. Who else? Please list the plays in which he hit WRs deep.

King this is not a good argument, as Alex Smith was 0-4 on deep passes over 15 yds...and Foles hit quite a few...

I'll be happy to list them if you want but this not a good tactic for you.

Yes, on the Conley play the cornerback fell down, and on the other hill play, he was literally not being covered. Literally any qb including Cassel hits both those passes. Or are you saying Smith couldn't have done that. Hell the Conley pass wasn't even good. A good pass and Conley has a chance at a TD.

These are nothing like the Maclin TD pass this week or the Hill TD pass last week.

This isn't some Foles thing. We've seen the last 3 weeks an increased emphasis on deeper passes.

All I'm saying is Smith was 0-4 on passes over 15 yards and foles hit a bunch of them.

You can guess or speculate on what would've happened etc...I'm just commenting on your original question

This will be a much more educated discussion after he starts this week, which I hear he is. One game is a small sample size and not to be relied on.

If Smith hit those passes I wouldn't be here touting his deep passes and him taking deep shots. They didn't cover Hill and the CB fell down on Conley's catch. On the play where Hill was being covered but still had a step or two on the CB, he was under throw forcing him to stop running and make a jump catch. Those plays are plays Alex Smith can make. We've seen in the past few weeks that he's now willing to throw deep even at covered WRs and has even completed his fair share of them. That combined with his normal efficient self makes this offense a lot better.

Tyreek Hill has added something to this offense that we've never had before: a deep ball threat, and that has opened up the offense so no matter who is at QB, Foles or Smith, we will be taking a lot of shots the last half of the season and I bet we complete a lot of them. Add that to the other things Smith does well, and I think this offense is better with him than Foles though Foles might be the 2nd best back up after Romo.

It's straight stupid to compare Smith and Foles first couple years. Smith came into a WAYYYY worse situation in SF. It's not even comparable. A more ready QB could have had "better" stats, but marginally. It was a different era of NFL when Smith was a rookie than Foles was. Foles put up stats forcing the ball. Smith played within the game to win ever since Harbaugh.

Lets be honest what did we expect Reid to say. He was hardly going to come out and bench Smith for the Media and fans to go crazy about.

With that said who knows what he is feeling, who knows why he really brought Foles in? Was he just uncomfortable with Bray and Murray or did he want to challenge Smith.

Let's get it straight, and nice and un-twisted:

You have Smith.

Then, you have an IDEAL Smith in Mr. Foles, whose head has not been ****ed with by the likes of Mike Singletary, and who is not afraid to take the shot now and again, be it short OR long.

Glad I could be of service this morning.

Foles had like 4 passes over 20 yards.

Not picking sides but that throw to Kelce ruled OB was an amazing deep toss that Alex might hit 1 out of 50 throws.
