If you believe Fisher he was actually extended during the offseason.

Fisher said discussions about an extension started at the end of last season. He said he agreed to the deal “well before the season started” but was not aware of how it became public.

Now why an organization would give a coach a double secret extension & then announce it when the coach is about to drop to 4-8 & set the all time record for losses in anyone's guess. It's almost like they're trying to look bad.
