Making the case for Tony Romo...

Right now, the Chiefs have just over $5 million in cap space. For 2017's league year, they are set to have around $5 million. Upon rolling over this year's cap space, they will have around $10 million before ever making a roster move.

My preferred approach to the offseason would be picking up Romo and drafting a QB early. My preference (right now) would be Pat Mahomes from Texas Tech. Here is how the Chiefs could do all of this without blowing things up.

1. Cut Alex Smith, void Nick Foles' contract. First off, Foles' void is a no-brainer. It saves over $10 million. Next, if the Chiefs do decide they want Romo, you move on from Smith. Some say they can't cut him yet, and I don't know why. Sure, it would result in $7.2 million in dead money. But it also saves $9.7 million. That alone is enough to keep Eric Berry, and the cap space total jumps to over $30 million.

Hypothetically, with $30 million the Chiefs could keep Berry, bring Romo and a draft class in, and still have room to make a few moves. But lets say they get greedy...

2. Cut Jamaal Charles. This one, I do not want to see. I think we could work out a large pay cut before hand and keep a potential good running back. But, if not, this adds another $7 million. They now sit at $37 million in cap room to do what they want.

So basically what I am telling you is that if the guys at OTC know their shit, the Chiefs could replace Alex and Foles with Romo and a draft pick for a smaller price. They also would have the available money to keep Berry, and even Poe if they please. Seems like a no-brainer to me, if they can pull it off.

The Cowboys aren't going to just release Romo.

Unfortunately, this....

For all the thinking in my head today that Alex just can't get it done, maybe Andy just can't get it done.

I mean, how many times this year did Alex deliver when we were forced to open up the offense? Certainly a few times...

I still don't know if you can win a SB with him, but I'm afraid the play calls limit him and any QB we'd get from doing it either.

We won't find out until we see the change. If Reid is this offensive guru shouldn't he tailor play calling to the strengths of the QB? Either he is overrated as an offensive mind or he is severely limited by Smith and the OL or both. If it is because of Smith I highly doubt we hear Reid raving about his QB in every press conference, so maybe he is just too stubborn in his playcalling ways.

Assuming Smith is here in 2017, I would like to see an aggressive commitment to developing a running game for next season. I think the passing offense with the Smith/Reid combo has hit its ceiling. Rookie led offenses look better and score more points.

My theory right now is that if they keep Alex, it means he is doing what Andy wants and therefore our offensive limitations are on Reid. If that turns out to be the case, we are truly effed as Reid won't be giving up play calling anytime soon. If they get rid of Alex, then he is obviously the biggest reason for limiting the potential of the team.

We'll see where they go.

reid can't work with a qb that can't scramble. his plays are by design only allowed to hold up 1.2 seconds.

Because he will get hurt and it will force the Chiefs to do something else! lol I dont want Alex Smith as much as the next person, but bring in Romo, and he gets hurt, something else has to happen. haha
