Which QB Do You Like

Ok gentlemen, time to let us know what QB you'd like to see the Chiefs draft this year. Maybe list the top 3-5 guys in order of preference.....along with a bit of commentary about each guy. I'll start this with....

(1) P Mahomes - Yeah his footwork stinks and yeah he played in a "gimmick" offense, but he is the absolute antithesis of Alex Smith. Mahomes is a gunslinger whereas Alex has the mentality of an accountant. So, in that singular regard, Mahomes is most appealing. Add in the fact that he has a cannon for an arm and you have the Chiefs starting QB in 2018.

2) D Webb - First of all, I like this kid's pedigree - son of a high school coach so he's been immersed in football/jargon for a long time. Plus he has prototypical size for an NFL QB, an excellent arm capable of all NFL throws, good pocket presence and a high football IQ. Give this kid a year or two to learn behind Alex, and he could end up being a damn good NFL QB. A lot to like about this guy.

3) M Trubisky - A bit concerned that he was only a starter for one year, but he appears to have a very solid NFL skillset. His floor might be higher than any other QB available this year. A safe selection wtih considerable upside.

4) D Watson - Everytime I see/hear mention of Watson as an NFL QB I think of Robert Griffin III. Pretty much similar skillsets, size, arm and football savvy. I thought RGIII would be a dynamite NFL QB, but sadly, he leaned on his running ability too much. I fear the same could happen with Watson. If available, I'd definitely take a flyer on him, but not without some concern.

5) D Kizer - Another strong armed QB with prototypical NFL size. His stats for 2016 were rather "meh", but there were definitely times when he looked damn good. Additionally, his supporting cast for 2016 was also rather "meh". That said, Kizer clearly did not raise the level of play in his surrounding players. Very, high ceiling, but could also be a total bust.

Who do you like???

I really like Mahomes a bunch. I think that if you fix a few of the warts on him, he's going to be stellar. I think patching up that footwork, getting him to step into the throw consistently, will be the biggest one. Teach him how to take snaps under center and run a pro offense, I think you're looking at the best QB in this class. He can already make every throw, is pretty damn accurate even using bad mechanics, can make those off balance throws ala Rodgers, and he can extend plays. Easily the highest ceiling, and it's not like his floor is bad either.

I'd probably have my top-10 list as:

1. Mahomes
2. Trubisky
3. Peterman
4. Watson
5. Webb
6. Kizer
7. Dobbs
8. Kaaya
9. Evans
10. Kelly

You think Mahomes has a Derek Carr ceiling, crow?

That's the upside I think I see.

From the skills I see, if he fixes the issues he has, I'd say higher. I think he has Rodgers' ability. The kid is one hell of a football player that just makes plays all day long. He's gotta be focused and work on his problem areas though. Like Rodgers, he needs to marinate on the bench for a season (not 3 however) I think.

I really think media pundits dwell on this "throws off his back foot" thing way too much with him. He does it, but not nearly as much as they make it out to be. Hell, if you listened to them you'd think he does it every play. It's kind of laughable. Does he do it a little too often? Well, yeah maybe a bit and he needs to work on consistently stepping into the throws he has the room to do so. Even then, he primarily steps into throws properly.

If he's out there throwing dimes while standing on his head, does it matter? I mean, I watch that Baylor tape and the kid pretty much does everything right in terms of climbing pockets, throwing with good mechanics, and so forth. Kid threw some absolute darts 30 yards down the field in that game.

Watch the Oklahoma game, he saw a lot more pressure. He does quite a few things right. I see him reading the D. Had a few balls sail on him, had a few times the receiver fell down, but overall he had a good game. Saw a couple nice throws where he gets it out to the sideline where his receiver can make the catch, just beautiful stuff. Kid has a really good sense of when to throw the ball away and live to play the next down. Flags for holding killed TT in that game, couple TDs off the board. Made one really bad throw under pressure in the 2nd quarter that gets picked. Probably should have threw that one to the back of the end zone or away. He's definitely the anti-Smith in that he really trusts himself to thread the ball into tight windows, and he wins that throw much more often than he loses. That 2-minute drill TD before the half was Rodgers'-esque.

I mean that's just 2 games and you see ton's of what you want in a pro QB and you see him throw off his back foot maybe 3 times total. The kid is getting a bad rep for something he does with nowhere near the frequency that is being talked about by the heads. Gimme Mahomes every day of the week and twice on Sundays. Kid is going to be good if he gets with a staff that will tweak some minor things and let him go out and play ball.

No point in liking a QB. The Chiefs will let us down yet again.

1. Deshaun Watson would by far be the best fit. He has everything you want as a QB but a rocket arm, and even his arm isn't bad. He can make all the throws and he's by far the best leader with the clutch factor.
2. Pat Mahommes
3. Nate Peterman

I don't give 2 shits about a rocket arm as long as a QB can make every throw on the field. "Alex Smith" arm strength isn't Alex Smith's problem. He could have made the throw to Tyreek..

That's because you've shifted your baseline.

I'm not sure this team has EVER had a QB with a plus arm. That arm makes things possible that simply aren't possible with an Alex Smith arm. Stafford and Cutler make throws that nobody else can make. Granted, Cutler's also makes a bunch of reeruned ones so you have to have actual intelligence mixed in with it.

But Watson's absolute ceiling is Tyrod Taylor precisely because he doesn't have the arm strength to drill that pass into a small window.

You're not worried about a big arm because you've lost track of the benefits of actually having one. But if you settle on a guy with an 'Alex Smith arm', you're counting on that guy being the best technical passer in the league if you want him to be elite. That margin for error is extremely small. You're looking for outliers like Brees at that point and that's simply a bad gamble.

Alex has average arm strength, so I wouldn't compare him. I think guys with "good arm strength" are not a problem at all. Guys like Jameis Winston and Andy Dalton.

My point is that I don't care if a guy has amazing arm strength. I want accuracy, football IQ and leadership first.

Gotta have a baseline arm strength. Watson didn't have much velocity at combine.

If only the Chiefs had a coach that's pretty good at developing a QB.
