This point of view just drives me nuts. The worst thing we can do is ignore or pretend that things in the past did not happen. Now I'm not for flying the stars and bars or having swastikas tiled in to my pool, so this new facination with erasing the sins of the past is not wise.

There is a huge difference between forgetting the past sins or memorializing them. You will have a bunch of nuts traveling to "mecca" to worship all the Nazi symbols from the past.

They'd be nuts regardless of whether or not they made a trip to stare at some artifacts.

I was recently in Nuremberg, Germany and found something interesting that they do with Nazi buildings and memorbilia.

They don't destroy it, lest they appear to be trying to bury history. But then again they don't maintain it, lest they appear to be glorifying the past.

So you have all these Nazi buildings and what not falling into disrepair. There it is, it happened, look if you want. We're going to move on with our lives.

I thought it was a pretty shrewd course of action.

I'd say put it in museums.

Regardless of whether or not you believe in the ideology, it's still an interesting sliver of human history.

Yeah, my grandfather brought a ton of Nazi/Allied stuff back from WWII. I'll pass it down if I ever have kids, otherwise, I'll probably donate it to a museum one day.

I have a Luftwaffe officer's dagger, a Fairbairn-Sykes dagger, a book autographed by Guderian, a picture autographed by Manteuffel, a silver coffee creamer from the Der Deutsche Hof (hotel in Nuremburg where the high command would stay during rallies), a brick from the Berghof, tons of medals, tons of Nazi stamps/postcards, a big wooden desk with the imperial eagle and SS insignia carved into it (gramps snagged it from some SS HQ), and a picture that looks like its signed by Hitler (probably a fake since my dad got it in the 70's).

I've posted some pics in the WWII thread in the Romper Room.

http://chiefsplanet.com/BB/showthrea...gs+WWII&page=7

I can snap some more of the other stuff if anyone is interested. The desk and Hitler auto are at my grandfather's place, though.

I had the chance to visit Dachau in 1976. Just thinking of it 40+ years later still gives me chills. I can't imagine being there during the liberation.

A 100-year study of visitor surveys at Dachau shows a considerable improvement in visitor experience beginning in the mid-1940s. The improvement is believed to be due to the addition of a gift shop and snack bar.
