I've had pretty good luck dealing with eBay. The only time when I've had a problem was with a kayak I wanted and the person selling it was asking the same price as retail.
It was used but in really good condition and the guy wouldn't budge on the price and my question was "why wouldn't I buy this from a retail store if I wasn't looking to save a couple dollars?" and the guy had no answer. Stick to things like books and Chiefs tickets where depreciation isn't a factor and you should be OK.
