Which is why you can't compare eras because if those players who played back then played today they'd be bigger and faster themselves. In 40 years, this Chiefs team will probably get smashed by whoever wins the SB at that time.

The 85 Bears were amazing and dominated in their time. We love our Chiefs but no need to disrespect the Bears by acting like this softass generation of football is better. At least back then you could actually hit the QB and play defense.

Bob Hayes ran a 10.06 100m on a dirt track over 50 years ago, he would be the fastest player today and always has been.

Jim Brown 6-2 230 which is big today, he could play.

Gale Sayers could play.

But, not too many others due to lack of size, speed.

Bears Wilie Gault ran a 10.10 100m, Hill...10.19.

Gault's track time may have been faster, but I contend that on the football field, with pads and football cleats, Hill is faster.

To me there has only been 1 offensive player, and 2 defenders whose speed on the football field met the Tyreek Hill eye test, and Willie Gault isn't one of them.

Bo Jackson, Deion Sanders, and Darrell Green are the only players that I have ever seen that clearly look like the fastest in any given football game.

Gault was a long strider and had a great kick at the end of the race, on a track, with track cleats, but on the football field Tyreek Hill can hit his top speed in significantly less time than Gault.

I think Hill has the fastest acceleration ever seen in the NFL. Bo, Prime Time, and Green were all very fast, obviously, but none of them ever trained for speed the way Hill does. Even Gault as a sprinter didn't train the way Hill does. And earlier someone said Gault was an Olympic sprinter, but he never competed in the Olympics as a sprinter, because of the boycott. He did make it as a member of the USA bobsled team.

Bo is the closest to Hill for initial acceleration, but Hill is just on another level. Tyreek Hill reportedly ran a 4.22 or 4.23 in workouts before the draft. Mecole Hardman reportedly ran a 4.24 at the Georgia pro day, but when you watch Hill and Hardman make big plays, it takes Hardman about 5-6 strides to hit top speed, and it takes Hill about 4 strides.

So, you can reference all the track stats you want to, but on a football field I will take Hill over Gault all day every day. I will say that I am not old enough to compare Hill to Bob Hayes on the football field, so I have no reference to compare them.

Add in change of direction and I don’t think anyone can hang with Hill.

Hill makes dudes that play in space look like fools. I can’t imagine trying to defend him when you’re not used to playing in space

That's true but I wonder how much Hill would get injured if he played in 85 w their rules. Hill is tough but man WRswould get killed when they went over the middle in the 90s I can only imagine how 80s were. Plus, CBs could more back then.

Would be interesting that's for sure. Brings up another question if 85 Bears played current Chiefs what rules would they play under? Today's rules or back then?

I talked about Hill being the fastest "football player" we have seen. I have never seen anyone as fast in football situations as Tyreek Hill, so I totally agree.

And it;s very realistic to give Hill at least a 10.05ish base on his 10.19 HS time. That 20.14 200m tells us that.

Those at sub 10.10

Bob Hayes
Alvis Whitted
Trindon Holliday
Jaoby Ford
Darrel Green
Ron Brown
Sam Graddy

9.1/9.2 old yards

Bob Hayes
Willie McGee
Mel Gray
Curtis Dickey
Frank Budd
Cliff Branch

Hill belonging in with that gang above.

I think 50 years ago the times should probably be considered inaccurate. Hill ran a 10.19 laser timed while Hayes ran hand-timed. Apparently we need to add .22-.24 seconds to all hand-timed numbers.

That is based on this site and this site, which I googled and did no further research. Hayes probably did actually run somewhere in the 10.2s and Tyreek would have beat everybody.

Unrelated to that, but Jim Brown would be an absolute beast today. He'd be a more violent Marshawn Lynch and it would be so fun to watch. Sayers would be amazing to watch in Andy Reid's offense if he gave him at least 15 runs a game and 10 targets in the passing game.

That 10.06 was electro timing, not hand timed. A hand time would read 10.0.

Hayes ran a 9.1 for yards a half dozen times and it was all done on tracks far FAR inferior to what Hill ran on.

Put Hayes on these track today, just as he was in 1964 and he;s running 9.95 simply because of track surface. I have ran on dirt and a mondo track HUGE difference.

Yes Brown would be a beast today just not a five yards a carry one. Sayers would dazzle us as usual.

I don't know if players can really get bigger and faster at this point.

The human body isn't designed to get that explosive.

If players are going to KEEP getting bigger and faster we're going to start seeing guys tendons just exploding on the field due to the laws of physics.

There's no way to know for sure, but I'd highly doubt we've reached the peak.
