The Chieftain’s Hatch has a wealth of armor knowledge. He doesn’t just go with the common accepted opinions, he does real research and actually reads the manuals.

I was a tanker in the M1 during the Desert Storm era. The inside is cramped (yea, it's a tank), But damn luxurious when compared to that Tiger.
That would have SUCKED!!!!! They point out a lot of salient issues...mainly maintenance. I don't think people understand how often a tank breaks down. They are quite complex. Even during peace time, keeping all 14 tanks in the company operational was rough. Always 1-2 were down with something. The M1 is fairly modular. Fairly easy to fix. #1 The track and wheels are a MOFO. The worse case was throwing both tracks to the inside in 3 foot of mud at 2:00 am. Those tracks/wheels on the Tiger would be a total b*tch. #2 Transmission issues. They occur frequently. I can't even IMAGINE the tiger maintenance in the middle of battle. The crew compartment size of the Tiger surprised me. It is quite important to be able to switch positions. They illustrated those points well. Tank design is programed to fail at something. Armor, movement and fire power are the main constraints. They are pitted against each other. They noted that as well. The key take away: Tiger fit the bill for its' designed purpose. I am glad I didn't have to fight in it. I guess that would apply to most WWII tanks though! |

Watched an interview of a tank gunner who went up against a Tiger. He said something along the lines of.... His crew of 14 Sherman tanks came upon 1 Tiger tank. They fired on the Tiger and the shells were just bouncing off. That Tiger was firing and taking out 1 Sherman at a time from left to right. By the time the Tiger destroyed 4-5 tanks the others were exiting their Sherman tank having realized they were no match for the Tiger.
At least that is what I recall. Always thought that was an interesting story. |

Very cool. I had no idea that we captured one and sent it "home" for evaluation.

There roles were not the same. Whereas the Tiger was designed as a sniper asset (tank killer), they were forced into the assist role that the Sherman was designed for. Quote:
Though, according to Patton what won the war was the Jeep and the M1 Garand. I tried to verify this, but couldn't. Makes sense. Last edited by Holladay; 07-25-2022 at 06:46 PM.. |

I saw this a while back on the then Military Channel now AHC. Since I was a kid I have been interested in WWII stuff that led to one of my hobbies of building scale models. I love doing the research for the builds. Seeing the story about Gustav and Dora started a 8 to 10 year search for such a kit to build. Finally found one for a reasonable price.

I am glad they built that monstrosity because it took up so many resources and was about as useful as a teat on a warthog.
