Must Watch Series

All this talk about series, how network TV Sucks, and how hard it is to find quality shows, and some excellent shows that fly under the radar, I need a comprehensive review of all the series I need to see.

For good entertainment, I would be willing to buy DVD sets. But I've recently picked up HBOGO by kiping it from my parents, and recently got Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Here is a listing of shows that I currently own or have seen all the episodes of. If it isn't on the list, just assume I haven't seen it.

Spoiler!

Here is a listing of shows on my list to watch (mostly due to this thread)
Spoiler!

I work a ****ton, so it is hard for me catch a series while it is on to get it on the DVR, but I recognize the entertainment value and am willing to go after the Must See shows. Accordingly, I'm not necessarily looking for anything that is still running. I'm up for watching stuff that has run its course.

So what say you, Planet? Which shows should I see?

UPDATED for the shows I've seen recently.

Really enjoying S6 of The West Wing.

Leo's heart attack and CJ's elevation to Chief of Staff was powerful stuff.

Also shows how simple it is to write a female character WELL instead of leaning into GRRRL POWER, with CJ getting walked all over by the generals before finding her footing. Particularly with the mirror of Toby being in way over his head as press secretary.

Happy Face

Didn't have anything come up in the search. Been enjoying the heck out of Happy Face with Dennis Quaid. Highly recommend it.

I believe S6 is when I absolutely gave up.

5 was iffy for me; definitely noticed a decline from 4 (and 4 was a decline from 3) but I stopped watching outright in 6th. Not because it was worse than S5 (it probably wasn't) but because it wasn't any better. And 5 burned up the remaining inertia from seasons 2 and 3 (which were damn near perfect television).

I eventually came back and watched 'em all, but it wasn't mandatory viewing for me.

I don't think they realized how important Sam was to the show or how much they would lose by sidelining Leo a bit. Then they tried to course correct putting Leo in the VP slot and trying to get him back in the game a bit over the last couple seasons...and it was too late.

But mostly it just went way up its own ass. Our heroes were just never wrong. They were never human. They became the platonic idea of a Mr. Smith sort of perfectly calibrated moral compass.

ive heard a lot of good things about that.

Wondering if anyone else watched "the leftovers" (MAX)?

I'm about 7 episodes in and enjoying it so far - but hoping there's a payoff coming and not one of those "lost" situations.

If you like cars, real cars, not those EV POS, there's a new Grand Tour special season (4 episodes) streaming now. First EP is "The not so very Grand Tour." Some really great cars and associated cinematography.

Without spoiling anything, I am not sure what kind of payoff you are looking for but I definitely didn't mind the ending although a little weird but so is the show a bit.

It's in my top 5 shows ever. Don't give up!

My first watch I honestly struggled for about the first 5ish episodes before I finally got into it and was hooked.

And I too, had sworn off any Damon Lindelof after having suffered through Lost. This is not the same, I promise you. It might not have the "answer" to what happened to everyone that you're hoping for, but that's not the point of the show to begin with. It's a show that gets better as it goes on, IMO.

I'm 20 minutes into Netflix supposed next hit sci-fi series The Eternaut

It looks good enough, but too many of these foreign made projects are doing this new dialogue thing with no subtitles ... instead substituting canned and dry studio looping that tries to match the actors on set with completely different voice actors

It all comes off stilted and kinda kills the experience for me, I would rather read subtitles than listen to dialogue that doesn't match the actors on set

I really hate when I have to read subtitles, but voice dubbing over the original actors voice is so much worse. It's fine for a show every once in awhile, but its getting annoying that almost every single new interesting show is in a different language.
