Yeah, the whole "he was a bad person" thing is just a stupid reason to keep Rose out. They kept him out because he gambled on the game, which at least made some kind of sense, until MLB got in bed with gambling then it didn't. It was politics, plain and simple. Enough people in power, that could affect such decision, didn't like Rose, so they blackballed him.

I saw him at a sports memorabilia store in the forums shop in 2009. I was wearing my Pujols jersey at the time, I thought about talking to him but I figured he'd try to charge me.

Nobody was in there.

It's not so much he was a bad person. He was an embarrassment as an individual, they didn't want to attach MLB to him when at any moment he could say or do something abhorrent.

If Pete had just shut the **** up this would have been solved years ago but he just couldn't.

Yes, that’s what changed. If we’re talking about PR stunts, there you go. Everyone is playing their part, even MLB. Whatever.

McGwire has admitted to using steroids as early as 1989… his third year in the majors.

That means he was taking steroids for 14 of his 17 seasons in MLB… if you believe he didn’t start before 1989.

Link: https://www.espn.com/mlb/news/story?id=4816607

Quote:
"I remember trying steroids very briefly in the 1989-1990 offseason and then after I was injured in 1993, I used steroids again," McGwire said in his statement. "I used them on occasion throughout the '90s, including during the 1998 season."

"Rose acknowledged he had a sexual relationship with the woman in court documents made public Monday, but he said his information and belief was that it started when she was 16. He was 34, married and the father of two children in 1975, when he says he began having sex with the woman, referred to in the filing as "Jane Doe." Rose said he does not recall how long the relationship lasted."

I could probably agree with this part. Kind of similar to TO's situation for a minute. If he'd just kept his mouth shut and played ball, he probably would've played a few more years, and probably would've gotten into the HoF sooner.

FTM, even a career.
No one is saying Bonds wasn’t great. It’s countering that McGwire did nothing in his first few years - presumably free of PEDs - that indicated he could be elite enough to make the HOF without juicing.

And if they were all doing steroids from the start, then does that make it better that Bonds was just a better player on steroids than others?

I do think that's a significant part of this, yeah. Manfred/the owners don't give a shit about Pete Rose, but they would care about pissing Trump off.
