You can find good WRs through the draft and free agency. You can't find good Left Tackles in the draft or free agency unless you pick inside the top 20. Supply and demand. |

JFC what a bad take. You think Cincinnati regrets taking Chase over Sewell? I sure as hell don't. OBJ at LT didn't stop their offense from being better than ours.

Chase does not protect the most valuable asset on the team. But Sewell does. It's a Quarterback dominated league. The player who protects the health of its QB is more valuable than the player who catches passes from the QB. |

I was recently watching Gruden's QB Camp with Jaxson Dart, and Gruden hammered on Dart about protecting yourself as a QB and adjusting line protections to help keep you from getting hit. Unless an NFL coach is an idiot, they are going to operate just like Gruden and make sure it is in everyone's head, especially their QBs, to keep the QB clean. So, with that, I really can't fathom where an NFL coach wants a WR over an LT. They also want their QB to be on top of their own shit. That is the part where anyone can see eye-to-eye with you, but it stops there with your argument. The Bengals took Jonah Smith 11th overall in the 2019 draft, then took Burrow in the 2020 draft 1st overall, then took Chase in the 2021 draft 5th overall. Jonah Smith was supposed to be the LT of the future. When they took Chase, they were headed into Smith's 3rd season, where you expect most guys to turn the corner and become the player they'll be for the bulk of their career. They weren't likely to take Sewell there. Now, you could argue they'd have a fairly immediate need at RT coming up, but I don't think that really should have been a huge argument at #5. |

Not only that, he was injured in training camp in his rookie year and missed his entire rookie season. He started 10 games at LT in 2020. So, you think in the spring of 2021 they were going to throw that investment away at LT even though he was starting to pile up a bit of an injury history? They continued to start him at LT for the next two seasons, where he played a full slate of games in both years. He turned out not to be all that at LT, and they moved him to RT when they signed OBJ. You can only look at this in hindsight and say "well yeah it would have been a good idea to take Sewell" but at the time there's no ****ing way in hell they would have or should have had that thought process. Williams was a stellar prospect coming out of USC. The fact that injuries plagued him and led to less than apt production doesn't mean you can run around saying now that it was some inept decision-making on the part of the Bengals, because it simply wasn't at the time. |

Look at what the Chargers did. They doubled up on Tackles. Which was very smart since Herbert is made of glass. |

You must be a big fan of the Chargers, having exactly zero playmakers and missing the playoffs year after year, too?

The Chargers are playing the long game. Get the QB and Tackles first. Then get the weapons. Tackles can play at a high level until 35. Slater and Alt aren't going anywhere for the next decade.

I’d try to make a deal with Rashee and backload it. I would also look to add another receiving threat (WR or TE) in the first 2 rds next year when Kelce leaves.
Keep adding every year

Burrows issues are because of himself. Holds on to it too long.

It's always a delicate balance. But I would lean investing most heavily on protecting the franchise moving forward. And I would keep drafting weapons, but being judicious in which I pay long-term.

They signed Reiff and Collins to 1-year deals and tried to get a 4th rounder to work in D'Ante Smith. Those decisions got the Bengals to the SB and the AFCC despite some subpar O-line play. Speaking of Smith, he was looking like an okay swing, but injuries, and he just tore his patellar (sounds familiar). They drafted Amarius Mims to man the RT spot last year in the 1st. It's really hard to build the entirety of a roster from the draft, and one thing or another is going to suffer along the way. The Chargers aren't the model because they haven't even made the playoffs as a contender. They got a couple of wildcards and got their asses smashed. At least the Bengals were competitive and probably will get back to being so again. And you know what, it took 4 years after the Chargers drafted their QB before they addressed RT in the draft. You know how long it took the Bengals? 4 years. So, what are we even discussing this for? Last edited by kccrow; 05-15-2025 at 12:19 PM.. |

Since you're going to question the Bengals, why didn't your Chargers take a RT in those drafts? They could have taken Trevor Penning in 2022 instead of Nelson. They could have taken Anton Harrison in 2023 instead of Johnston. What's your excuse? That's right, it doesn't fit your narrative and use of revisionist history. |
