Even if Simmons is a complete bust I think this might be Veach's 2nd best draft. I really liked every pick down to the 7th.

I wasn't super amped about Bossa but I see why we took him and there was definitely a need in this LB unit for someone who can cover.

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

This was easily my second favorite Chiefs draft in my lifetime. It was literally like watching Van Gogh paint or Einstein talking about theoretical physics. Brett knew precisely who he wanted and got them PRECISELY where he thought the value was great.

If Simmons gives us 5 years of solid LT play on his rookie contract and plays well enough to earn a second contract, we won the draft. It literally doesn’t matter what we get from the rest of the picks at that point. That pick alone, where it was made, with the positional importance relative to our style of play means the draft was a win, overall.

The exciting part of this draft is that every single guy we drafted has a REAL chance to be a special player.

Simmons could absolutely end up “Silverback V2”
Lott could end up Warren Sapp
Gillotte could end up Hendrickson/Justin Smith
Williams could end up Marcus Peters without the BS
Royals could end up Stefon Diggs. Similar style and Royals is just a little bigger.
Bassa could end up Fred Warner (same size, converted safety)
Smith could end up Darren Sproles or maybe even Kamara.

Obviously those are perfect case upside comparisons…but each one has a chance of realizing that upside in this system.

It’s odd that you had omar Norman Lott

He was the one guy that really shocked me. I guess it’s a size / movement rarity that causes him to go so high up but he wasn’t a star in college

Breshard, Gillotte, Nohl were the biggest(college) stars we picked

I went back and looked at the 100 prospects I liked for this draft, and we have 6 of them in-house from this draft and the UDFA group.

OT Josh Simmons
DT Omarr Norman-Lott
DE Ashton Gillotte
WR Jalen Royals
LB Jeffrey Bassa
WR Elijhah Badger

100 players cover a lot of ground, but nonetheless, I liked them.

My major complaint on the Simmons pick isn't that I didn't like him, it's with taking such an enormous risk in the 1st round. I felt like trading up a few slots for Conerly was much safer, and I also felt like Conerly was the better pass blocker. Taking a risk on Simmons was something I thought you saved for the 3rd round or later. I remain convinced that Veach overshot on that one. I don't think teams felt comfortable with that injury, and he would have slid much further. It is what it is at this point, though,h and the only thing there is to cling to is hope on that one.

I'm happy overall. I hope I eat shit on Simmons and his draft slot, we kind of need me to.

I still think Luther Burden is gonna be a ****ing STAR but I'll take a fix at left tackle plus Bassa plus Royals instead.

Bears fans are already going bezerk over Burden, incidentally. I got him in dynasty though, so I'm good

Maybe. Williams couldn't get on track with 3 good WRs last year. It's all on him at this point because that offense is f'n loaded with talent now. Maybe even too much high-end talent because those birds start chirping when they don't get fed.

Will this rival the 2022 draft?

With all due respect -- and I mean that sincerely, you are one of the best -- I hope you eat shit on Simmons too. I've read the studies cited and there are a lot of additional folks I respect that remain pessimistic.

I just can't get past the Chiefs knowing all the background on this type of injury and going forward anyways. Big balls. There must be some reason the team was satisfied Simmons will make an NFL-functional recovery from the injury. Partial tear? New surgery method? Stem cells?

Surely there must be something that makes the braintrust believe this time, with this player, it's going to be different.

A partial tear that was fixed quickly and cleanly? That feels like it could be the reason. I'm sure the MRI showed a good recovery. Burkholter said he went from saying don't take this player to do take this player after seeing all the medical info. He clearly saw positive signs.

It's May!

Hope springs eternal.

What I like is that it's very plain to see a role for each of these guys. There are no guys where you're scratching your head and wondering how they fit. Each of these kids has a skill-set that is obviously useful and a spot for them to use it.

Now, you know, some of them may just not be able to make the jump, that's possible.

But it's not hard to see several making the grade.
