Another ex-Steeler O-lineman dies young...

PITTSBURGH -- Former Pittsburgh Steelers guard Terry Long, who was indicted on federal fraud and arson charges three months ago, died at UPMC Passavant Hospital on Tuesday. He was 45.

Cause of death was not disclosed.

Long was the Steelers' starting right guard from 1984-91. He was suspended for violating the NFL's steroids policy in his last year with Pittsburgh.

Steelers president Art Rooney II issued the following statement on Wednesday:

"The entire Steelers organization is saddened by the unexpected death of Terry Long. Terry was a very good player and extremely hard worker throughout his playing career. He will be missed by his former teammates and co-workers who enjoyed his camaraderie as part of the Steeler family."

In March, Long was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges he fraudulently obtained loans for a chicken-processing plant which prosecutors claimed he burned to the ground for insurance money.

Mike Webster, Carlton Haselrig, Terry Long; who's next, Steve Courson? These Steeler O-linemen must've been popping some bad sh*t. Wonder if Webster tried getting Grunny and Szott on the juice when he ended his career in KC and they were rookies?

Being that it wasn't illegal at the time who knows...It is odd though that that generation is dropping like flys from it.... bodybuilders & football players that is.

Thanks---I knew there was someone else.

I remember one of those guys died in a car accident after leading the cops on a high-speed chase while throwing beer bottles out the window at the police cars.

There is no real way of knowing what killed these guys. I can tell you this: I seriously doubt it has anything to do with anabolic steroids. I'm sure that they all did them. I'm sure that Grunny and Szott did too. However, there is NO evidence to suggest that steroids have any link to any kind of damage to the heart or brain or any life-necessary functions. If they are abused, they can seriously mess up your hormone levels and give you shrunken balls. They might even take away your hair and give you back acne, but they aren't going to give you cancer or cause some wierd disease.

Exceptions:
sharing needles = bad idea (infections, diseases like crazy, AIDS)
Oral Steroids = bad idea (liver toxins, stomach ulcers, etc...)

The real cause of death is probably a bad ticker due to YEARS of chronic drug abuse and massive partying. If you're an NFL football player in the eighties you were probably tempted to use massive amounts of coke and amphetamines. You'll live through it, but you'll tear yourself up. So much so that when you get old and arthritic, the simple blood thinning asperin that you take to alleviate joint pain can cause unstoppable internal bleeding. Anyway, that's how most of these body builders and wrestlers die. Uppers, coke, and alcohol. They just HAPPEN to be on steroids too.

I just don't think you realise how many people take this stuff, and have since the 1960s. Back then it was brand new and people took MUCH more. They took racehorse steroids in bulk. It was like throwing a truck-load of hammers at a single nail. Those guys didn't die. They got tits and strong. For decades (and still today) most professional athletes and olympic athletes take some form of steroid or at least a pre-cursor. Still, you don't hear about steroid related deaths. BUT! Every time a new upper is introduced onto the market and catches fire (diet pills, ephedra, etc...) you get massive amounts of stories and hundreds of deaths per year nation wide.

This may be true, but then there was Lyle Alzado, who maintained right up until his death of a brain tumor, that the massive amounts of steroids he was putting into his body while trying to make a comeback in the NFL was directly responsible.
Also the guy from the original Longest Yard (I can't remember his name, but he was the inmate with the shaved head and tattoos) who died of liver cancer a few years back and blamed it on 25 years of pretty much continuous steroid use.

Larry Brown will be up soon. He went from tight end to tackle. That was a pretty late growth spurt, if you ask me.

It can't be a coincidence that it's happened to four guys who played the same position for the same team. Even if it wasn't steroids, these guys had to be taking something similar that made them wack out when they reached their 40's.

Check out my first post... I think they were all probably taking the same amphetamines and coke... Probably off of each others girlfriends' breasts. Probably at the same NFL party. Probably weakened all of their hearts. Then, 20 years later... They take blood thinners (apirin) to ease up their arthritis from playing in the NFL and they bleed to death internally. Weakened by party drugs... Killed by aspirin... Very common.

Lyle: Dying man wants a reason. Sorry Lyle. Hundreds of thousands of people take steroids and YOU are the one with the brain tumor. Sounds about like the odds of getting a brain tumor if you're a plummer, or a banker...

Liver cancer: This could be steroid related if he took a lot of oral steroids. Look, anything you take in pill form has to go through your liver first, and not all of it is going to end up in your blood stream. Your liver eats up most of it (some studies say 90%). So, that forms free radicals and free radicals whether they come from food or steroids or inhaled paint thinner can make mutated cells and they can make a tumor. So...
