Oldest Piece of Clothing You Own.

This morning when I crawled out of bed, I pulled on a pair of shorts that were pretty ragged. I stopped and thought about how old these things were, and it occurred to me that I have had them since high school.

I'm coming up on 15 years from graduation, so that means they are 15 years old at minimum. But they are a brand name that indicates I likely wore them when I was still skateboarding, which I quit around the time I got a driver's license. So a more accurate guess is that they are around 17 years old. 17 freaking years these shorts have lasted. They're kind of a sweatshirt material, and I rarely wear them for more than between bed and dressed in the morning, or shower and bed at night. But over the years, these things have to have months worth of wear on them.

So what's the oldest piece of clothing you own?

Ha, I have a pink shirt that I wore under my pads during football back when I was a sophmore, junior and senior. It was funny because the pink shirt could be seen on film and in the stands. It's probably only 6 years old. It is now framed under my football jersey on the wall.

So Tim, how many inches has your waste size gone up since the Navy Issue? Mine has gone from 28 to 38.

I still have a blue velour jogging jacket that I got for Christmas when I was 14 or 15. I wore it regularly up until my wife put her foot down about three years ago. I still wear it around the house occasionally.

I have no idea what that velour is made out of, but it's like iron. Other than a little wear on the elbows, it still looks as good as new.

I still have a Royals 1985 world champs tee shirt. It has been to small to wear for about 17 years.

Christmas of '79, my folks bought me a black leather motorcycle jacket. It's been a coat, a blanket, a pillow, etc. for 27 years. Still looks great. I give it a coat of black shoe polish once a year, looks brand new...

I have a camelhair top coat my great grandfather wore. It's too small for me now, but I wore it when I was in college. My mom was cleaning out his house when he died...he was the oldest man in Sedala, MO when he died, age 105. The coat was from a men's "habidashery" in Sedalia from around 1930. Its a cool coat. My mom has a picture of great gpa sitting on a barstool in his favorite beer joint from around 1940, and he's wearing that same coat!
