New US church leader says homosexuality no sin

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Newly elected leader of the U.S. Episcopal Church Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori said on Monday she believed homosexuality was no sin and homosexuals were created by God to love people of the same gender.

Jefferts Schori, bishop of the Diocese of Nevada, was elected on Sunday as the first woman leader of the 2.3 million-member Episcopal Church. the U.S. branch of the worldwide Anglican Communion. She will formally take office later this year.

Interviewed on CNN, Jefferts Schori was asked if it was a sin to be homosexual.

"I don't believe so. I believe that God creates us with different gifts. Each one of us comes into this world with a different collection of things that challenge us and things that give us joy and allow us to bless the world around us," she said.

"Some people come into this world with affections ordered toward other people of the same gender and some people come into this world with affections directed at people of the other gender."

Jefferts Schori's election seemed certain to exacerbate splits within a Episcopal Church that is already deeply divided over homosexuality with several dioceses and parishes threatening to break away.

It could also widen divisions with other Anglican communities, including the Church of England, which do not allow women bishops. In the worldwide Anglican church women are bishops only in Canada, the United States and New Zealand.

Three years ago when the Church last met in convention, a majority of U.S. bishops backed the consecration of Gene Robinson of New Hampshire, the first openly gay bishop in more than 450 years of Anglican history.

The Robinson issue has been particularly criticized in Africa where the church has a growing membership and where homosexuality is often taboo.

Jefferts Schori, who was raised a Roman Catholic and graduated in marine biology with a doctorate specialization in squids and oysters, supported the consecration of Gene Robinson of New Hampshire, the first openly gay bishop in more than 450 years of Anglican history.

The 52-year-old bishop is married to Richard Schori, a retired theoretical mathematician. They have one daughter, Katharine Johanna, 24, a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and a pilot like her mother.

Asked how she reconciled her position on homosexuality with specific passages in the Bible declaring sexual relations between men an abomination, Jefferts Schori said the Bible was written in a very different historical context by people asking different questions.

"The Bible has a great deal to teach us about how to live as human beings. The Bible does not have so much to teach us about what sorts of food to eat, what sorts of clothes to wear -- there are rules in the Bible about those that we don't observe today," she said.

"The Bible tells us about how to treat other human beings, and that's certainly the great message of Jesus -- to include the unincluded."

So what we have here in Hamas is a guy who knows absolutely nothing about fighting or guns who is tired of public schools pushing a moral agenda. Keep in mind he is the same guy who wants to use the schools to push his own moral agenda as well as wanting to dictate to everyone how we should handle fighting and firearms in society and is insulting about it at the same time. It would actually be funny as hell if it wasn't so sad.

Tell you what Hamas we will ask you your opinion when you actually know something about the subject in say maybe manufacturing pipe bombs or something.

I refuse to believe that the large majority of people subscribe to the selective moral leanings of Hammy and his kind. We need to stand up and be counted before they start sending 2nd graders home with Astroglide and AnalEase, questioning whether or not they are ghey.

Last I heard was his preliminary hearing ...no bond ...trial starts in July IIRC....

Gomez-Garcia's friend gets 12 years in prison

A man who helped accused cop killer Raul Gomez-Garcia flee Denver was sentenced to the maximum 12 years in prison Friday as an accessory to murder.
Jaime Arana del Angel helped his friend by burying the murder weapon and leading him out of town on Interstate 70, showing him the way to Las Vegas and California.

But his assistance had "extraordinary, almost mind-boggling" repercussions, said prosecutor Bruce Levin.

It cost prosecutors the chance to try Gomez-Garcia for first-degree murder and seek the death penalty for the murder of Denver police officer Donnie Young. Ultimately Gomez-Garcia went to Mexico and couldn't be extradited until prosecutors agreed to try him on a lesser charge of second-degree murder.

"Because of this, Mr. Gomez-Garcia escapes, in my opinion, true justice," Levin said.

Young's widow, Kelly Young, seconded his words.

"If he had been caught here, then definitely the death penalty would be what he deserved," Kelly Young said.

"Donnie was given a life sentence that night. (Arana del Angel) will get out and go back to his family. Donnie's not ever coming home."

Defense attorney Frank Moya said his client helped the accused shooter escape because he was afraid of him. He also said Gomez-Garcia would likely have fled without his client's help.

As part of a plea bargain, Arana del Angel, 28, must testify against Gomez-Garcia, 21, who will stand trial in Young's death as well as shooting and injuring his partner, Jack Bishop, on May 8, 2005.

The two officers were working off-duty security at the Salon Ocampo banquet hall for a baptismal party when they turned away Gomez-Garcia and three other men who tried to get into the party without invitations.

Gomez-Garcia returned to the hall and shot both officers.

Arana del Angel apologized through an interpreter at the sentencing hearing.

Bishop said he was satisfied with the sentencing. "Nothing can ever change that night, but justice has been served."
