When we should have known

Last game 2005:
Chiefs 37, Bengals 6
Chiefs blow out playoff team at home with balanced offensive explosion

First game of 2006:
Bengals 23, Chiefs 10
Chiefs fold like a cheap wallet at home against a team they crushed in '05

That REALLY alarmed me. I knew something was really different about the offense in that very first game. Yes, the absence of Roaf and Richardson were big. Yes, Trent was knocked out of the game. But the difference between the last game of '05 and the first game of '06, same field, same opponent, most of the same players was night and day. Turns out that game was a good indicator of what the 2006 Chiefs would become.

Completely hollow.

2005: 10-6, ended season with a whoop and holler.

2006: 9-8, ended season with a whimper.

Six months of anticipation/dread/embarrassment follwed both last-games-of-the-season.

I think we both deplore the lack of preparation to attack the Colts' weak D. Yuck.

You should have been alarmed when Herm claimed the Chiefs were "running up the score" vs the Bengals last January because they actually passed the ball more than 5 times in the game and (gasp!) actually passed the ball further than 2 yards downfield and (double gasp!) actually passed the ball on first down.

Those are mortal sins in Herm's world

I'm sorry, but the Bengals DID start their normal crew, until the second quarter of that game, when ONLY Carson Palmer was pulled from the game. The Chiefs were up at that point 6-3.

Cincinatti continued to play all their starters until late in the 3rd quarter, they decided to pull Rudi Johnson from the game too. The Chiefs were up at that point 30-3.

To start the 4th quarter, a bunch of backups came in for big names like Chad Johnson (who was furious), Justin Smith, Odell Thurman, etc... The Chiefs then proceeded to "run up" one more score to ice the game 37-3.

We beat them soundly that day well before they pulled their guys. I think KC Johnny's point is valid.

A 5 yr old could have come up with a better gameplan...it was pathetic to say the least. What really bothered me was the lack of adjustments when they knew their original gameplan wasn't working. Great teams can adjust..The Chiefs couldn't....or rather they didn't

I can tell you when I knew. When we kicked a field goal with 11 seconds left in the first half against Denver in the second week.

I knew Herm had totally destroyed the offense at that point.

I'm not so sure it was a lack of preparation so much as a lack of brains.

Cha-ching!

Thanks, McCan! And Kitna had played KC MANY times as Seattle's QB so he was not a major drop off from Palmer. I think McCan makes the point convincingly that we stomped a playoff team at the end of '05 and then folded up when the same 2 teams played on the first game of '06.
