The "Official" Cardinals Discussion Thread.

Figured that if we had one thread to discuss Cardinals "stuff" it would be easier to find. What do you think? Good idea?

With teammates and club officials waiting for Chris Carpenter to reappear in the clubhouse, the big guy finally emerged from a side room.

And he looked, well, normal.

Carpenter headed to his locker and reached up, with his right arm, to pull something off the top shelf.
Wait a minute: Carpenter is using his pitching arm, the same one that went dead on him in the sixth inning Sunday night at Wrigley Field? Where was the ice, the bundle of tape, the bleak and haunted look of utter despair? Where was this team's next nervous breakdown? Where were the corner whispers that he'd be lost for a long time, and probably for the rest of the season?

"Right now I'm planning to throw my bullpen session on Tuesday," Carpenter said. "Right now, it feels OK."

The preliminary diagnosis is a mild strain of the right triceps.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From a poster on a Cards forum

GENERAL INFORMATION
DEFINITION--Injury to the triceps muscle or tendon. The triceps muscle is the large muscle at the back of the upper arm. The muscle, tendon and attached bone comprise a unit. The unit stabilizes the elbow and shoulder joints and allows their motion. A strain occurs at the weakest part of a unit. Strains are of 3 types:

Mild (Grade I)--Slightly pulled muscle without tearing of muscle or tendon fibers. There is no loss of strength.
Moderate (Grade II)--Tearing of fibers in a muscle, tendon or at the attachment to bone. Strength is diminished.
Severe (Grade III)--Rupture of the muscle-tendon-bone attachment with separation of fibers. Severe strain requires surgical repair. Chronic strains are caused by overuse. Acute strains are caused by direct injury or overstress.

PROBABLE OUTCOME
If this is a first-time injury, proper care and sufficient healing time before resuming activity should prevent permanent disability. Torn ligaments and tendons require as long to heal as fractured bones. Average healing times are:

Mild strain--2 to 10 days.
Moderate strain--10 days to 6 weeks.
Severe strain--6 to 10 weeks. If this is a repeat injury, complications listed above are more likely to occur.

RISK INCREASES WITH

*Contact sports such as football, baseball or boxing.
*Throwing sports.

Let's hope Carps is a Grade I Mild strain and he'll miss at most one start.

MIAMI (TICKER) —The St. Louis Cardinals are hopeful that righthander Chris Carpenter will be able to make his next start after he left Sunday’s 6-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs in the sixth inning with a strained right triceps.
Carpenter accompanied the Cardinals to Florida on Sunday night and will throw a bullpen session on Tuesday. St. Louis opens an important four-game series against the Marlins on Monday.

Still, the Cardinals have to be concerned about Carpenter, the 2005 National Cy Young Award winner who has a history of injuries and was making just his third start since returning from “Tommy John” surgery.
He sailed through the first five innings Sunday, allowing only one run, but ran into trouble in the sixth and was pulled when he felt pain in the elbow while facing former Cardinal Jim Edmonds. Overall, Carpenter yielded four runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings.

After the game, he did not think that the injury was serious.
“They think it’s just a slight triceps strain,” he said. “We’re going to wait and see what happens the next two days. I was able to do all my exercises afterward, all my rotator cuff exercises.”

However, losing Carpenter would be a huge blow to the Cardinals’ playoff hopes. Sunday’s loss dropped St. Louis seven games behind the first- place Cubs in the National League Central Division and three games in back of the wild-card leading Milwaukee Brewers.

Carpenter is officially listed as day-to-day. He had allowed one run and eight hits in nine innings in two starts prior to Sunday’s contest

6-4 road trip not so bad.

Got Pitt and Atl this week. Hopefully we can get some sweeps.

Wainright pitched great in his rehab start on Saturday.

Rumor from the Boston Globe:

The big names in the pitching market are almost all gone. CC Sabathia has made the Brewers a bona fide contender in the National League Central, and beyond. Rich Harden has solidified the Cubs' starting rotation. And so now we wait for action on the Blue Jays' A.J. Burnett, or even (gasp) Roy Halladay, who according to a Newark Star-Ledger report is available because he's frustrated in Toronto.

The Cardinals, despite the fact they will soon get back Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright, have the best shot because Burnett wants to go to St. Louis and he has a no-trade clause to 15 teams. The Blue Jays and Cardinals have also done business before, with the Troy Glaus-Scott Rolen swap.

No way we give up Anderson or Ramus for him. His contract and no trade clause and potential FA status and his current pitching abilities doesn't make him a top FA.

But that being said pitching is pretty hard to come by and he's done it in the past. You think he would make it through waivers?

If so I think Duncan could probably get him back to being a top shelf pitcher in MLB.

Despite Sunday’s loss, the Cardinals completed a 6-4 trip and won five of their last seven after dropping the first series on the trip at Chicago.

Down the stretch, the Cardinals have 20 home games remaining and 15 on the road. Two of the home games will be against Milwaukee and three against Chicago.

We need to SWEEP those series with BrewCrew and Cubbies..... and be on a hot streak to have a chance at Playoffs.
