As a rule, if you stiff a server, for whatever reason, the rest of the staff will know all about it and you aren't likely to ever get good service unless you wait out the staffing turnover. Not saying it's fair, especially the profiling bit, but it happens.

whoops, by no means did I mean to call you cheap, just that the server thought you were and added the auto-grat.
in Chicago, I gratted everyone no matter what...black/white/hispanic...6 or more and you're getting the 15% surcharge...

In Normal, I rarely used the grat because 15% really is more like 12% because most people tip on their tax as well...the 15% gratuity tips on subtotal and most people where I live are 20% tippers...so not only do I think the gratuity is tacky, but I'm actually losing money when I do it.

Even black people tip in Bloomington Normal

I go out and get drunk like 4 nights a week and nothing beats the late night La Bamba around here...always tip the same dudes like $5 and I never have to wait in line and they start making my order as soon as my drunk ass stumbles in there...tipping has its perks.

In any other setting everyone gets a taste if they warrant it.

I look at the practice as sowing a crop. I always get tables, my food is always right, my drinks are perfect and the service is always over the top.

I have obtained reservation on booked night and walked past everyone waiting.

I have had tables cleared of patrons for me. If I need a haircut they always fit me in at my leisure.

I have used this in other cities and it has the same affect.

It is never extravagant but just enough to make them want to help me before anyone else.

This is how I do it and it has worked for 25 years.

Playing at a club one night, were between sets, and get hungry.
We get drive through,
Park,
Eat,
proceed to smoke a "cannon", then get the bright idea we should walk back in and tip them for actually getting the order right.
So we did.
Got thrown out
Made it back to the gig with 5 mins to spare

I tip very well when service is great (25% +); particularly if it's someplace I go often.

If service is average, so is the tip. if service is bad, I don't tip; and probably won't go back. Or I'll mention it to the manager as to why I didn't tip the waiter etc. I doubt they give a sh*t but at least they'll k now.

someone recently told a story about getting into a fight at a royals game over tipping a bartender and c r ac k e r jacks, but he wasn't aware that "c r a ck er" is a filtered word that comes through as "The Man", and no one had a fuqqing clue what he was talking about

Ah, that makes sense. Thank you.

what about when the cable guy comes to you house and sets up everything? I wasn't sure about that one, I assumed he made a decent wage and didn't tip but it made me wonder.

But you are right, it seems that every place has a tip jar. I used to work for tips (as some of you know already from my rants in the past) but it is a little stupid. Every coffee shop and now a lot of fast food joints are having them.

I've put some thought into this. Here is a list of services that I am aware of that you should tip:

-Delivery drivers (pizza, jimmy johns, etc)
-Server at a restaurant
-bartenders
-cocktail waitress
-bathroom attendents in fancy places
-valet parking
-cab drivers
-dealers at a casino
-barista
-movers
-hairdresser/barber

what am I missing here?

now dealers at a casino you should tip, but what about the cashier? they always have a tip jar but why do they deserve a tip?
