Quitting Smoking

Both the wife and I need to quit, and since we've tried to quit at the same time before, and THAT REALLY SUCKED, I took the plunge first.

Haven't had a cigarette since last night. I've quit several times in the past, sometimes for up to three months - quitting ain't the problem - it's staying quit that kicks my ass.

Any advice on non-smoking methods/products or encouragement would be appreciated.

I guess the most important factor is to stay away from smokers, once yours system adjusts to the new situation, then you can watch people smoke and not get boned up over it.

Today I've decided to quit for the 2nd time in my 3 years of smoking a pack a day. The first time, I quit for 5 days without any cravings whatsoever but decided I enjoyed smoking way too much to quit. This time I'm pretty determined to kick the habit for good.

The thing I found the hardest was not having those little breaks you could always look forward to no matter what you were doing. It's definitely ALL about willpower though. Just gotta man the **** up and do it, I guess.

I quit at the first of the year simply due to finances. Since that is the main reason it has been tough. I only smoked a little over 1/2 a pack a day but it is still driving me nuts. I bought a pack last Friday (paid monthly) with the intention of smoking 1 or 2 a day, just enough to "feel better." Well, that one pack lasted all of 4 days which really showed me that I need to do this all or nothing. Since there is no money I know which way this is going to go.

Now, it's been just over two years since I quit. I used a drug that didn't contain any nicotine, it works on the sensors of the brain. It's by prescription only, it's called Chantax. I got it in December 2006 and I was off cigarettes in 5 days. I was as die-hard a smoker as anyone could be, in fact I didn't want to quit because I enjoyed smoking. My wife, who quit two years earlier, asked if I would try this new drug.
I've got to agree with this statement. I smoked three packs a day (more if I was drinking) for twenty one years. Those of you that know me or have had adult beverages with me know that I *ALWAYS* had a cig in the hand... as a matter of fact I sincerely doubt there is a single picture of me on this website without a cigarette. It didn't matter that my mother died last Christmas of lung cancer at the age of 59 or that her father died of lung cancer at the age of 59 or that her mother died of lung cancer at the age of 59

Over Christmas this year while trying to enjoy being with all four kids it hit me that if I didn't quit smoking and lose weight I would never see the youngest get to be the age of the oldest (those of you who remember ex Ms. Llama and our story remember we had twins almost 4 years ago)

I went on the Chantix (the dreams were tolerable) and by day seven even if I wanted a cigarette, the damn thing tasted like shit and provided no enjoyment.

In the last month I've been through all my former smoking triggers.... driving long distances, driving short distances, waking up, going to bed, sex, idiots that I manage, idiots that I don't manage, drinking socially, drinking binge-ingly, being around smokers, being around militant non smokers, being in smoking bars, going back to Warrensburg and the bars that I owned / worked in, etc... no cigarette, and no desire to have one.

There is a pack of Marlboro Ultra Lights that I have in the glove compartment of the Jeep that I bought as a crutch if necessary on my quit day. Has not even been opened.

On a side note, my sense of smell is beginning to be annoying I will never be a militant non smoker because I understand the addiction, but being in a non smoking area and smelling a smoker walk by (work, the gym, wal mart) is almost enough to make me puke... Not only the smokers, but I swear things that I couldn't smell for the last twenty years are now overwhelming (including Mrs. Llama's gas)
