Nobody knows the comp. We traded for Vrabel.

That pretty much sums it up.

Most of us are hoping it's the Sims pick from the Bucs.

Sims for Vrabel = good trade

I'm pretty sure we've gotten all the compensation we're going to get from the Sims and Bennett deals.

I never said it was likely.

But I can guarantee you guys Vrabel's age think about shit like this. It's what leads guys like Kurt Warner to sign in Arizona and guys like Favre to sign in New York.

For guys that have won it all, they have to find a new challenge. Taking a 6-26 team all the way is the ultimate accomplishment.

I can see it from a QB perspective, because the games ride on their shoulders more than any other player on the field.

LB, not so much.

But I see your point.

It's not just the game, it's the leadership thing we've all been talking about.

If he comes in here as a spot player but a team captain, and the defense goes from last to top 10 in one year, he's a fuggin hero. At the end of the day, ego is a big motivator for guys that make millions of dollars playing a game...

You may or may not find this helpful. Belichick and his tree are strong advocates for the kind of Veteran Leadership that George Allen pioneered.
You have a young team and Pioli strongly believes in veteran leadership. Vrable is one of the smartest players in football (currently a candidate to head the players association and at least possibly your player rep) and this will allow him to be a leader in general and especially, if you are going to adopt a 3-4 component, as a leader in particular. LB's are the cornerstone of the 3-4 and Mike has played, and mastered all the nuance of all four of the linebacker slots in the 3-4. He would be invaluable in the transition process. RIGHT NOW, not next year. This is his final year on his existing K, so you should provbably look at this as a 1 year transitional move.

IMO Mike was the greatest FA signing in Pats history (The first game I ever went to was Game 3, Year 1 of the American Football league, 1960) and I've been a Pats fan since day 1. Vrable has been a rock solid player for 8 years. Always plays, very few injuries. he was fine last year and surely can contribute now.

I know you'll worry about the price you pay, but I don't think you need worry about the concept.

Cheers, BostonTim
Thanks for the inside take. We'll see how this all pans out, and I'm not really worried about much of anything at the moment regarding our defense that doesn't have to do with our Corners. Everybody else on that "D" can go ride a Herpes Boat to Haiti.

5.) Ray Lewis is also 34, and he'll cost a lot more than Vrabel.

What is so difficult about this for you to grasp?
We agree on exactly two things in this world.

There is no "Patriot Way" there is the Belichick Way, and that only works because he's the greatest X's and O's coach in the history of the league who also happened to fall into the greatest draft pick of all time.

What have Eric Mangini and Romeo Crennel won with the same strategy? Jack sucking ****.

Maybe, just maybe it's the guy whose defensive gameplan from a Super Bowl ended up in the Hall of Fame due to its brilliance and not the idea that bringing in 800 year old linebackers because they are "leaders" is somehow a panacea.

Someone said earlier that a poster on PP said they would rather have seen Brady traded.....I called BS...until I found it:

http://www.patriotsplanet.com/BB/sho...6&postcount=22

As I said in my first post Dave, I would have been much happier and would feel much brighter for our future if TFB was the trade bait here. How would that have hit you?

Trade away an over 30 QB coming off of a series of botched multi-ligament repairs with a proven more than capable QB to replace him, or Trade away Vrabes, without the medical issues, and no one to replace him?
