Chiefs trade 34th pick for Cassel and Vrabel

Chiefs just got Cassel, ON NFLN!

http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/2009/02...with_patriots/

Quote:
The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Saturday that the club has acquired QB Matt Cassel and LB Mike Vrabel from New England in exchange for the Chiefs second-round pick (34th overall) in the 2009 NFL Draft. The agreement is contingent on both players reporting and passing their physicals.

“I have a long history with both players,” said Kansas City Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli. “Mike and Matt are men that I respect both personally and professionally. I look forward to having them as new members of the Chiefs family.”

wow that's optimistic.

You're still short on talent, comparatively, have a REALLY young team, in the tough AFC, and implementing a new system on offense and defense with all new coaches this year.

But other than that, you're right in the mix...

WHAT?

IT WASN'T ALL MATT CASSEL'S FAULT?

To try to limit this question across multiple threads, I'll create a new thread on this by tonight. Might be sooner, might be later, but I'll definitely get to it.

Bottom line -- it's hard to say for sure whether he'll succeed, but I think he has all the mental and physical tools and the risk is lower with him than it would be with some unproven draft pick.

Winning the West may be easier than getting a Wild Card this season based off the schedules for the West teams. And I really think we are now a player in the West.

I think we will trade our 1st round pick for another first and a third.

Chiefs are on the road to success!

Holy cow. I just showed up and saw this.

In most cases I would decry a trade such as this. It's essentially the Matt Schaub trade from last year.

However, the key difference is that Pioli knows these guys. He didn't just watch film, he saw them from an insider's perspective. If a two-time NFL Executive of the Year knows these guys from the inside and thinks it's a good trade, then I'll trust his judgment.

Because I'd put money that Matt Cassel never has a 16-0 regular season here.

Setting an impossibly high standard to justify a personnel move you don't like is not going to work in this argument.
Not expecting 16-0. But I did expect a QB that had a chance of developing into a great QB. I don't think Cassel gives us that chance. He's only had one year as a starter, but he had a hell of a supporting cast. He'll have to improve a lot this season just to stay where he is in QB rating or any other measure you want to use for QB play.

Based on POINTS allowed, the Patriots were 25th. That sucks.

That argument pretty much gets canceled out by the Bill Belichick thought it was a good trade argument.

Wow!

I like it...a lot! Cassel as starter. Draft DT and keep Thigpen to develop as a second stringer...ala Huard.

I really think this is a great move. A little expensive, but we have the money.

The only thing I don't like about it is that it feels like my beloved AFC Chiefs are going to turn into an NFC-like football team. I like the old school, hard-nosed football of the AFS. I expected to move towards NFCesk though, since we now have NFC coaches.
