Boston sportswriter rips Belichick on personnel decision

Did anybody else hear the sportswriter from Boston on Soren Petro's show today? (I don't remember his name).

He talked about several bad personnel decisions that Bill Bellichick has made since Scott Pioli left the Patriots, including throwing Mike Vrabel into the Cassel trade and trading away Richard Seymour.

I don't necessarily agree with him, and I think getting a high #1 pick for a old player is a good move, not a bad one.

But it IS interesting to hear someone from the New England area speculating that the Patriots are worse off without Scott Pioli and that Pioli was a lot more than just a "Yes" man for Belichick.

How about Denver? They spent 3 first round picks on a short CB who can't cover or return kicks, on a running back with no vision and can't break tackles (the next Lawrence Maroney), and another on a 4-3 DE who can't play in the 3-4.

They got Louis Murphy. Thats more than we got out of the draft.

Louis Murphy made some good plays, but he was also right in the mix for most drops too.

If it was Ron Borges, then you can discount everything he has to say. He has a deep and abiding hatred of Belichick, and has since day 1.

This "guy" is the Boston equivalent of KK. In other words, a moron.

Belichick got a high first round draft choice for an aging defensive end. In 2011, the new CBA should be in place that will limit the amount of rookie contracts. So not only did BB rid himself of an aging player wanting a big contract, he gains most likely a Top Ten choice without shelling out $50 million dollars.

Secondly, Mike Vrabel is DONE. The mere fact that Scott Peeholi traded for this guy makes me sick. Cassel should have been traded to the Chiefs for a 4th or 5th round pick, not a second.

And again, BB saved $3.5 million by ridding himself of Vrabel.

All of this, but still, Vrabes would've made our team, and probably started, if he hadn't been traded. That goes more to say how bad our OLB situation is than how great Vrabes is at this point in his career.

The Seymour contract is a no-brainer.

But watch -- we'll cut Adalius Thomas and then Seymour and Thomas will both sign with the freaking Jets. Kill me now.

At some point, the natives will get restless when you fail to win a Lombardi. But, even with that being said... Big Hoodie took over in 2000. And, all he's done is win. In 2001, his first year - yes, they failed and won only 5 games, but since 2001 they've been great...

2000 - 5 wins
2001 - 11 wins (SB win)
2002 - 9 wins
2003 - 14 wins (SB win)
2004 - 14 wins (SB win)
2005 - 10 wins
2006 - 12 wins
2007 - 16 wins (SB loss)
2008 - 11 wins
2009 - 10 wins

112 regular season wins with a 14-4 record in the playoffs... all in 10 years.

Sure, it's been a few seasons since they were back to back title champs, but they're still doing pretty good. Is the dynasty coming to an end? They all do, but there's still a lot of talent.

That's an interesting view, if anything it's their horrid drafts over about the last 5 years. Their team talent has decreased since the guys that were suppose to step in and play haven't been good enough.

Wow. We went 18-0 two years ago before the insane helmet catch kept us from having a perfect season and you're acting like we're the Harlem Globetrotters since 2004 ended. Get a grip.

The 18-0 year was the last year of an old defense hanging on, the draft picks not stepping up has turned the defense into swiss cheese.

Yeesh.

Jerod Mayo. Defensive ROY last year, and injured early this year? Remember him? He doesn't suck. Neither does Meriweather, and neither does DArius Butler.

But they're young and there was not much pass rush to speak of.

Look, I'm not saying the drafts over the last 4'ish years have been great. Definitely not. But there is some transition involved here, and it's not like it's been a complete wipeout. Calm down.

Outside of the Colts game, the Pats defense wasn't really their problem. It was mostly terrible second half collapses by the offense and predictable (and terrible) playcalling by Bill O'Brien.
