You'd be surprised how much a child would rather have YOU around than not. When your parents are never there, you start to wonder if they even give a crap, whether you're working for your kid or not. And even when the kid doesn't want you around, tough sh*t. Its not your job to be your son's friend. Its your job to be his parent. And that's a job that can only be done correctly by investing time into it.

Diddy, I would just tell the boss that you can only work so many hours because you have a child to take care of and leave it at that. If he fires you, then its on him.
