Sad news this morning: Phil Harris, captain of the Cornelia Marie fishing boat featured on Deadliest Catch, has died in Alaska. He was 53.Harris suffered a massive stroke on Jan. 29 while the Cornelia Marie was in port at St. Paul Island, Alaska. The boat captain was flown to Anchorage for surgery.
"It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad - Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end," sons Josh and Jake Harris said in a statement on the Cornelia Marie site. "For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down."
In a statement the network said, "Discovery mourns the loss of dear friend and colleague Captain Phil Harris. He was more than someone on our television screen. Phil was a devoted father and loyal friend to all who knew him. We will miss his straightforward honesty, wicked sense of humor and enormous heart. We share our tremendous sadness over this loss with the millions of viewers who followed Phil's every move. We send our thoughts and prayers to Phil's sons Josh and Jake and the Cornelia Marie crew."

That's really sad. I love the show and enjoyed watching Captain Phil and the Cornelia Marie's crew (especially Jake and Josh).

Poor kiddos, I only saw a few episodes but it seemed like his son was really friggen worried about him. He cooked him a burnt ass sausage sammich, but it was nice. RIP.

Bummer.

He's had so many health problems over the last couple of years, you knew this was on its way. I didn't expect it to be quite so soon, but you never thought the man would see 65.

But come on now, chain smoking, no sleep, long HARD ours.
Hell after 13 years on the highway I was beat up, I can't imagine what he put his body thorough with a life time of fishing THOSE aters.

They didn't say, but I wonder if he had the stroke while fishing on the show?

sounds like it may have been between King and Opilio crap seasons?

I think it happened while they were in port offloading.

Seemed like a good guy, doubt his sons will be able to continue, they never seemed to "get it".

If I remember correctly he had a health issue with a blood clot on one of the episodes; once those become an issue it's a crap shoot.

You are correct. I was thinking then about how lucky he was to not have a stroke.

When you start coughing up blood mother nature is telling you it's time to change your ways IMHO..
