Home security question

I like to lock our bedroom door. We have a two story house and I figure if someone breaks in I might not hear them, however if they want to get to my family (my small toddler sleeps in there with us) getting through the bedroom door should wake me up and give me a fighting chance. My wife says I'm crazy. I figure if nothing it's at least a deterrent. What do you guys think? Am i crazy?

I can bust my way through a hollow core door just as fast as I can come through using the doorknob.

Seems reasonable. I don't do it, mind you, but I've got a Dobermann loose in the house at night.

True but at least I could hear you. Plus it only takes a second to lock the door. I don't see how there is any downside even if it's not effective.

can't hurt ... keeping the door closed will keep the smoke out in case of fire too.

If you're really concerned, get a burglar alarm and a gun. There's your fair warning time and means of defense.

Not really concerned. I live in a safe neighborhood, just seems like a reasonable precaution that's all. I am considering getting a gun though.

I'm a really light sleeper, I leave the bedroom door open and a light on behind the hallway so I could see any shadow coming plus the rat dog would be tearing their ankles up. They wouldn't have a chance. I used to have Rottys but they expired and I don't have the patience to train another set.

I have a basement window at ground level right underneath the deck. All you'd need to do to get into my house is kick out a pane of glass, flip a lever, slide the window and step down. And because I'd be asleep two floors up, I'd never hear it. Because of that, even though I live in a good neighborhood, I have an alarm system. Runs me about $35 a month, but the peace of mind is worth it.

As for the gun, know what you're doing and be careful with it. Learn from my well documented mistake. Load it with Glaser safety slugs and don't pull back the hammer unless you mean business.

What's your well documented mistake? I am pretty comfortable with guns my family loves them so I have shot quite a few.
