Ok about to run a "focus group" with some bar owner friends and I want to see if what they THINK brings people into their bars is really the reason....

Would really appreciate you guys telling me what FIRST brings you into a "new" bar and once we have enough ideas I will start a poll...

I know a few obvious ones... know someone who works there. Went to see a band you like. Went to meet friends who already hang there. What else do we have?

(Once we have this sorted out, we'll do another poll on why you come back to particular bars after that first visit)

1. Location.
2. Pool tables.
3. Live music and/or a great jukebox. Absolutely NO fuggen karoke!
4. A long bar with tall, comfortable barstools.
5. Great food and this means anything other than the standard wings.
6. Outdoor patio with room and a view.
7. Great staff who look after their clients.
8. TVs. Big ones and Lots of 'em.
9. High ceilings.
10. Dart boards and/or other tavern games.

You'd probably like one of my locals down here. They have some young guys that play in various bands that get together on Mondays to play Memphis style music... lots of Booker T and the MGs and such... just a bunch of guys taking a day to play what THEY want to hear not what gets them paid.

Flying Saucer is a chain out of Ft Worth... just an fyi. great selection though.

ok, but what brought you there in the first place? assuming you didn't know any of that before going...

knuckleheads here in KC has open mic on sats and sundays..it kicks ass..you never know what you'll hear...

I don't know, it would depend upon a lot of things. I used to be in a pool league, so I may discover a cool bar from having played pool league.

If not that, then it was because of some band that I wanted to see.

If not that, then it was 'word-of-mouth' from friends who liked it.

If not that, then it was a local review and/or advertisement.

Or it may be because I was drunk as hell and followed some chick into the bar only to find the bar a heavenly mecca of everything I ever wanted in a bar.

Lastly, it must have a cool or interesting name if I'm going to want to return there. I sure as hell don't want to tell my friends I'm hanging out at the "Place Gay Name Here" Bar.

I'd say the environment of a place is very important. You want to have a fun, relaxed environment that people will talk good about and get other people into trying it out for the first time. Your best advertiser is people. If you can make the people that go to your bar have a great time, they will talk you up to other people.

I always prefer bars that consistently have live music, target the crowd you're going for with cutting edge LIVE music... bring that in & they will come.

Word of mouth, cool idea or theme such as only cans of all kinds of beer or an awesome beer selection, an awesome sports bar showing the game I want (Chiefs) or sport I want to watch at that time when others might not be showing it (soccer). It's gotta be nice, updated and new, but not douchey or an old dive with some cool history.

Radio spots are the best ad $ IMO, work the local scenester rags for write-ups, especially when you bring in some rising & talented band.

Outstanding beer garden areas are another great draw.
