Back in the day when an band would release a song, the only way you could get the song is by purchasing a Cassette or whatever right? Most of them would cost around 8-9$ each.... If there were 2 million Cassettes sold. You would be looking at 16-19$ million in revenue - payment to the artists and production costs, etc.... In today's money 2 million would be around 26-27 million for that same artist and his cd....... Now we can have 2 million people go out and download the hit song for .99$.............. Seems like a lot of revenue lost to me... |

Labels Losing Money With iTunes Variable Pricing from the shot-yourself-in-the-foot-again,-did-ya? dept Right before Apple finally implemented variable pricing in iTunes it wasn't hard for many to predict that it would backfire badly on the major record labels as they tried to jack up prices. So, it should come as little surprise to find out those predictions appear to be entirely accurate. New reports say that the major record labels are losing revenue from variable pricing. Unit sales are dropping to the point that revenue is less as well. That's just bad business no matter how you look at it -- and totally preventable if they knew their own business. Plenty of people made it clear that sales would drop with higher prices, and it's amazing that the execs were unable to accurately predict how much. Sometimes when we question the motives of entertainment industry execs, people say that we're being unfair in questioning the "intelligence" behind those moves. We're told over and over again that industry execs are much smarter than we are, and they know better than we do. And yet, almost everything that has been predicted has come true... over and over again. The industry keeps doing things that at least make it appear that it has trouble understanding the long-term implications of almost every move it makes. Perhaps they are smart. And perhaps it's all part of some grand plan. But, to date, the only evidence we've seen is that nearly every move made by the industry has backfired, and resulted in less revenue coming in, while those who predicted alternative and embraced alternative business models are finding tremendous success. At what point do we stop assuming that the legacy industry execs "are smarter" and recognize that they seem too focused on the old way of doing business to recognize how to competently change course? |

Reerun, I know a guy who used to represent the RIAA in KC. If you want me to ask his opinion on how/if to respond to the letter, I'd be happy to.

But then there are hard facts like this: Digital formats now account for nearly one-third of Warner Music Group revenues. But the improved ratio is being driven by a sinking story on physical, and losses continue to mount at the major. In its fiscal third quarter review, Warner Music revealed a loss of $55 million, compared with a year-earlier drop of $37 million. That is the sixth-straight quarterly drop for Warner, and during the latest period, revenues slipped 16 percent to $652 million. That actually beat analyst expectations, for what it's worth. Yet losses over the past three quarters are nearly $100 million. Meanwhile, the same old story on digital is getting worse. Digital formats only gained 2.3 percent during the quarter, and now account for 27 percent of the broader sales pie. Instead of replacing physical sales and forging a new business, digital seems to be flattening out prematurely. http://investors.wmg.com/phoenix.zht...747&highlight= Piracy is still affecting sales by 15% or more to this day. That's a lot of lost revenue. |

If you don't think that the actions of you and people like you aren't causing people to lose their jobs and that multimedia companies aren't losing money hand over fist, you're ****ing dumb. And BTW, reerun, I haven't seen anyone in here tell you how to fly an airplane, but don't seem to have any problem telling people about THEIR business. You're ****ing dumber than I could have possibly imagined. |

Clearly, nobody is saying that. We get it. You aren't stealing a lot. You're stealing a little bit. Do you really think that makes it OK? How much stealing is too much stealing?

No question about it. The genie is out of the bottle and unless they can come up with the media to be uncrackable and one that users will embrace it will continue. Unfortunately for the music and movie industry.
