10 things we need to do to win 8 or 9 games

1) Sign a guy like Jeff Garcia or another vet to backup Cassel and to take over by the 3rd or 4th game when Cassel is still struggling. At least someone that can legitimately challenge for the starters role and push Matt. A guy like Garcia could stopgap next year too, if we decide to take a QBOTF.

2) Start Studebaker, the kid has made big plays whenever he gets a chance to play. Whether it be in coverage or in the pass rush, the kid makes plays and is young enough to become a true difference maker. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get double digit sacks if he is able to play starter time. That is just as a pass rusher, he is also solid against the run and has shown to be pretty good in coverage as well, I think he can be just as good as Vrabel was in his prime...if not better.

3) Keep DMC on the field and shift him around like Al Saunders used to do all the time with Tony G to get advantageous mismatches. Whether it be a linebacker, safety or corner covering him, there is gonna be a mismatch we can take advantage of.

4) Start DJ, Belcher and Shaun Smith as the middle triangle. They may not be great, but they are upgrades over what we trotted out there last year and have a lot of room to grow in this system.

5) Get a decent player to start RT from the final cuts. We have nobody that can play effectively there for a whole year and not give opposing teams a place to attack. Or give a call to sister ****er...

6) Pull out all the stops to score early in games and force teams to pass more, with our secondary and pass rush potential we can be a opportunistic defense if teams are forced to put the ball in the air frequently against us. If teams get up early and are able to pound the rock against us, it will spell trouble for us early and often.

7) Start Casey Weigman at center. The difference between him and Rudy is night and day. Rudy should be moved to guard and we should try to fill the spot with a long term answer sooner rather than later. Casey aint no spring chicken, but he should be good for this year.

8) Let Jamaal Charles and DMC get involved in gameplans early and often, this can go a long way towards #6 coming to fruition. Making teams take those weapons away will leave some pretty good players (Moeaki, Chambers, Bowe, Horne) open or at least single covered.

9) Keep Kendrick Lewis on the field, I really like this kid. He seems to have a good nose for the ball and is a great blitzer. Seems to play much faster than the times he put up in workouts, doesn't he....

10) Start Moeaki and pray he stays healthy. The kid may have been credited with a drop on the interception, but the effort he put into trying to catch that ball is what he is all about. If we can find someone to get him the ball on time this kid will shine, trust me. He can get us over 500 yards and 5-7 touchdowns every year ihcsh and we have a real quarterback. The kid showed he can block effectively and if he can stay on the field for both the run and pass, that makes it increasingly hard for opposing teams to account for him all the time. This is a big reason why he flourished in college when he was on the field.

I could probably add in another 5 (or more) things...but if those ten things happen, I think we have a chance at .500 or maybe a game above that.

If Cassel is our starter all year, I dont see us winning more than 6 games.

Erm...we had just spent a first rounder on an LT the year before...you should've stopped at "The Chiefs really screwed up last year with taking Jackson".

Exactly. We're not making the playoffs anyway this year. Grab our franchise QB in the 1st. And get some damn OL and a NT the rest of the draft and FA. Another LB wouldn't hurt either.

To be honest, I really think we're a QB, a couple OL, a NT & another LB/pass rusher away from being pretty damn good.

I don't think the premise of the OP is necessarily to replace Cassel, but instead to have a viable backup who can at least be competitive if and when the levy breaks and Cassel falls.

Boss had thrown out an idea for Rosenfels. I like that. I like Tarvaris Jackson. I like any player currently wearing a Packers' uniform. There are people who can be had for the right price (or Page).

The problem with Garcia is he's a lefty and our RT sucks ass.

I think you made some pretty good points, with everything outside of Garcia and making DJ a starter. I'd start Williams and Belcher in the middle.

In all honesty, I'd start Croyle until he gets hurt. Hopefully, that'll be 5-6 games into the season, and maybe we can hover around the 3-3 mark. At that point, Cassel can come in and "facilitate."

I know, but I don't think he is the answer. I should have said if they were going to take a lineman, I'd rather waste it on a LT and move Albert to guard rather than Jackson. No way in hell does that guy deserve to be the #3 pick of the draft. He will probably go down as one of the biggest busts in Chiefs history.

To be honest, right now, Williams is better than DJ. He's more consistent and he got to the QB on his blitzes. I saw DJ blitzed a few times and he didn't get there. I wouldn't mind Belcher and Williams starting.

Johnson is a much better player than Williams.

That exact same thought came to me last night. If you want to salvage the season and instill at least a little confidence in this young team, give the old burro a call, FFS.

The chiefs have this reoccurring nightmare of trying to force Squared back up Quarterbacks into Round Starting Quarterback holes. Steve DeBerg a career journeyman was great duct tape. Dave Kreig was a busted reclamation project. Joe Montana was successful because lets face it he was Joe, the confidence he inspired had the Chiefs playing way beyond their means.
Steve Bono=Fail, Elvis Grbac=Fail, we let a future Pro Bowler and AFC MVP in Gannon go in Lew of Grbac. Trent Green for all practical purposes a back up given the starting job on the recommendation of a former employer (Rams/ Vermeil). And Tyler, who knows we didn't give it much of a run?
Croyle is a "China Doll", has tons of talent but no durability. And once again Cassel, a back up given the job on a "loaded" past resume. The Chiefs have to understand, you have to scout a "blue chip" prospect and let it develop. The Colts didn't have instant karma with Peyton , they gave him time he gave them talent. So frustrating to see the Chiefs continue to use the same busted mentality. And granted most all the examples sited, from Kreig to Green were "King Carls" quick fixes, to insure his "five year" plan to the Super Bowl.
But they really need to put a
"best foot forward" in addressing this problem in the future. IMHO.
Do a little research and come back when you actually have a ****ing clue.

I'd trade a mid round pick to San Francisco for Nate Davis or to Dallas for Steven Magee and see what they could bring to this team this year.

If nothing else they'd give us a backup that might be able to stay healthy for more than 2 quarters of play.

Both have impressed me with how smart they have played in this preseason, and both have strong arms.
