My prediction for Matt Cassel's season stats....

Most Chiefs fans thought Trent Green was a bust after the '01 season. Many on this BB called him TrInt. But, in 2002 the personel around him improved. Priest became our full time RB. Also, Trent had another year in the system as the starting QB. In 2002 he broke out and had a great season.

I think Matt Cassel is in a similar situation this year. The personel around him is improved at almost every position. I think he's going to take a significant step forward, just as Trent Green did.

Prediction:
15 1/2 games played
3675 yards
22 passing TD
1 rushing TD
9 INT
62% completions
87.0 QB rating

The offensive players compared to last year.....

WR Bowe - better - most say he had a great camp and will have a better year

WR Chambers - better - having him all year is better than the revolving door of chumps that we had last year

WR McCluster - better - the not so secret weapon

RB Charles / Jones / McCluster - better - far better than Johnson / Charles

O-line - better - collectively better than the trial and error approach to last year's O-line

FB - same - Castille

TE's - same / better - if Moeaki is injured our TE's will be the same as last year, if Moeaki plays our TE's will be better

KR / PR - better - Arenas / McCluster will give Cassel a short field very often

Defense - better - our D may not be world beaters, but I'm sure they cause more turnovers than last year and give Cassel more opportunities

Offensive Coordinator - better - Weis will be better than Haley was last year, Haley was "wearing too many hats" and couldn't do the job justice

Even if Matt doesn't improve much as a QB, everyone around him is better which will make him better by default. But, I do think he'll improve his own game somewhat.

If Cassel doesn't show significant improvement this year, he's done, and he's a bust. We'll need a new QB for 2011.

Discuss.....

===================================================

The discussion of Cassel is a good one. But, most of you are missing two of my main points.

1. Do you agree that Cassel's stats should improve this season, simply due to the better talent around him? Maybe not the numbers that I predicted, but a marked improvement none the less. To achieve the numbers that I predicted, Cassel would need his own personal improvement in conjunction with the improved talent around him.

2. At the end of this season, if Cassel does not improve, even with better talent at almost every position around him, he should be declared a bust, released and Haley should seek a new starting QB for 2011. Agree?

If Weis utilizes our running game the way it should be and Cassel passes for anywhere near 3000 yards our offense will be top 12.

Dane should be celebrating this thread.

When it's bumped in December we'll have a good laugh and wonder if Cassel will hit 15 TD before the year is up.

Here's mine:

1. There will be more posts between week 1 and week 17 of this season pointing out how bad he sucks than he will have individual yards passing.

2. He will get boo'd loudly at Arrowhead at least 2x.

3. There will be more games in which he sucks and declared he played well than instances where he points out what he could improve.

4. He'll play well enough that we'll be out of reach of Locker, Luck or Mallett.

Hooray.

This was actually a comparison I made before the '09 season, and I think it stands up in some ways now, but not in others.

Similarities: Green did play in college, so he has Cassel in that regard, but he didn't play in the NFL - at all - until his 6th season. His arm strength was questioned (here) from day one (and in fact throughout his entire tenure in KC), there was concern that he threw too much to backs and tight ends instead of attacking downfield and he had a reputation for holding the ball too long and taking a lot of sacks (49 with the Redskins in '98, 24 in just 8 games with StL in '00, and then 39 his first season here).

Differences: Green showed much, much more in isolated spurts in 2001 than Cassel did in 2009. Green had 3 games where he exceeded 70% completions (Cassel had 1), 4 more where he was 60% or better (Cassel had 3), and he had 8 games where he threw in excess of 250 yards (Cassel had 3).

There is one final similarity of note: in the 2002 preseason, Green's performance was a real mixed bag. He came out hot (11-15 for 113 yards and a TD combined the first two weeks), but looked like complete shit the last two games (13-32 for 120 yards and 5 INT). Suffice to say, we weren't exactly jumping for joy about his play...

That said, there were moments in 2001 and early in the 2002 preseason where Green looked like a quarterback out there. I don't know how else to describe it. He was just the guy in charge on the field. It was obvious. And that's what I haven't seen from Cassel, not with any kind of consistency. No confidence, no swagger, no taking charge of the huddle, no intangible aura of leadership, none of that, except for (in my opinion) the Tampa Game this preseason. I thought that game was the best he's looked in a Chiefs uniform, he had a command of the offense, of the game, that I don't recall seeing any other time. In any case, that's the "it" that people talk about, and I think Green had shown signs in 2001. Cassel did not.

And that's what will determine everything, I think. He literally has a lot of the same 'problems' that Green had, the question is whether he can develop the presence that Trent had, and at this point in time I just have no earthly idea whether he can or not. Although I'd have to say I'm leaning more towards "not", because I haven't seen many signs pointing toward it.

If he does this,I will buy a Cassel jersey!
He could do it. If we catch 40 of the 50 we dropped last year he would have done this.

He can't do it. That is why Weis dumbed down the passing attack. Weis is no fool.

I agree with this. Green, though he had a pretty bad 1st season here, still showed flashes. He looked confident. Cassel looks uncomfortable, even with time to throw.

I haven't really seen anything that makes me think Cassel will be any better than Damon Huard. At least Huard looked more comfortable out there, even if he sucked.

If Cassel has the season that the OP predicts, this team will be in the division hunt. Those stats probably would have given us 2-3 more wins last year. And I think this team is better equipped this year.
