Hootie, why do you think it's SOP to add an automatic gratuity to large groups?

Do you work at Papa Del's Pizza?

From Google Review:

Quote:
Good Pizza, Awful Service‎‎
By Brad H - Jun 23, 2010
I'm a fan of deep dish pizza and the general perception among the student body is that Papa Del's is the best deep dish pizza around. However, each time I go there I am appalled by their terrible service and unbelievable prices. Many waiters do not provide good service at all, will ignore you, and chat with fellow coworkers at the bar instead. Once I went on a not so busy night, they seated us upstairs and we ordered a pizza that was supposed to take ~45min. The waitress basically forgot about us, and we were waiting for almost 2 hours! and she did not care at all. After you get your pizza they rarely come back to ask how the food is or if you need a refill on your drink. The wait times are so long and if you go on a weekend forget about getting your pizza in a reasonable amount of time. If they mess up your order they will not refund you but shrewdly offer to cook you a new pizza while you wait another hour and a half! The place is also dirty and falling apart, the bathrooms are disgusting as well. But, if and when you do get the right pizza you ordered, chances are it will be really good. So it is always a gamble when going there. If you do go, don't go during a peak hour, or only do so if you're not starving already and can afford to wait a long time.

Pretty much exactly how I handle server tipping as well.

I only got through about 15 pages before getting tired of reading. I have a lot to say on this pro and con. I am a huge advocate of service employees. There is a lot I could say about several things from a lot of varied experience. I am just going to narrow it down to a couple points and opinions. First of all, absolute must terminate situation for anyone who speaks even slightly indirectly on behalf of the company without permission. Period, zero valid argument for doing so. One other point I have not seen made here is why employees don't use the automatic gratuity. It is simple, they think they will make more. This was a small change tab, and many times the tip could end up being up to $200 if things went well and the right person with authority held the company card. That is potential, but thinking $100 plus is not at all crazy. I have gambled a lot and very rarely lost anything and the gains have been worth it by far. I have lost some pretty fair amounts also. Contacting someone never entered my mind. I am not picking on the guy, just sayin'. I have seen a trend of some places going to a policy of ALWAYS put the gratuity on the check and make it clear if asked. This makes sense in a few ways. First of all, an automatic gratuity notice should be listed in the menu. Therefore it is expected. Secondly, cool people will leave more...ALMOST always if there are several employees involved and things went smooth. A policy of always put in on the check and NEVER allow an obvious double tip situation occur is good for company PR. Several more percent in addition is one thing, and crazy tips are almost certain to be apparen or explained and thanks issued.. So, if $40 bucks is 20% and is on the check and they add say $45 more on the card, the manager should verify this was not a mistake of not seeing the auto-grat. I have seen calls back after companies and individuals figured these things out...and it ain't pretty. This also avoids things like I have seen where servers make racial determinations, people are bitchy, etc. It is not worth the controversy to the store for a server to make those choices. Surely this can be understood. I have done the pick and choose method myself, it just isn't good for the business to do so. For someone to roll the dice and come up empty is their fault. 3 percent is drastic, but the chance was there brother...even for ZERO. Hootie understands gambling from other threads on here. I would have advised sending that "I was just frustrated" type mail back to the guy to cut off any possible action. Even if the CEO offered to make it right to the owner, it should still be declined and an automatic termination. Just calling it like I see it from the business side. You guys didn't lose nearly as much as I have seen people lose anyway. I am tired, didn't write this out to make as much sense as I usually would due to laying on a bed in the dark with a laptop, but I do make some valid points there.

I've mentioned this in a previous tipping thread, but if you work for tips you're going to get some good tips and some bad tips. In the long run, they'll add up to some sort of average, and then it's your decision whether that average is worth your time or not. Any individual tip is just noise in the data.

So I ask this question: if you receive an abnormally large tip do you refuse to accept it and write a letter to the person and mail it back? Because if you don't like the bad tips then you should be consistent and send back the good tips.

Well, he mentioned that he's not looking to get money out of it, and the rest of it makes sense.... if they had left $200 on a $450 check, I'd certainly make an effort to contact them. Hell, if you're a manager, you probably let them know they can get a nice discount next time and are always welcome back.

3% over that length of time, taking up that many tables is more than a bad tip though, especially when each person is only spending $6 on food and drinks.
