Nonsense.

Marty Schottenheimer didn't like to play rookies and chose to play Ted Popson over Tony for most of his rookie season.

Popson started 12 games and played in 13 during Gonzalez rookie season and had 35 catches and two TD's. There's absolutely no way in the world that anyone can convince that Tony wouldn't have done the same, if not exceeded Popson's numbers.

While I doubt Moeaki is gonna be a Tony G., I you remember, Gonzales was really not very good his first TWO years. He dropped a ton of balls and there were those in KC wondering how in the hell Carl spent the number six overall on a tight end that cant catch. He read some book and got all into the game for his third year and became the beast he is today. Jusry will be out on Moeaki vs Gonzales for a few more years to be sure.

Actually, the Chiefs traded up to the #13 spot to grab Gonzalez. And yes, there were a few doubters on the old Star forum but since I wasn't living in KC at the time, I didn't hear of any doubters elsewhere.

The fact of the matter is that Gonzalez went from 33 catches his rookie season, to 59 his sophomore campaign to 76 and 93 in his fourth season.

The "doubters" were clearly wrong.

I doubt that Moeaki will reach HOF status (not because he's not a good player already, but HOF is rare and unique). It's clear however that if healthy, he'll be one of the better tight ends in the NFL.

There weren't many doubters, as TG was clearly the best TE in the draft. We traded up because Dallas would have likely taken him (they ended up with LeFlour, IIRC). It was a great move.

Hopefully he won't need to be. There were too many years where it was Gonzo and nobody else. And I don't know about you, but I'd rather Moeaki be the Novacek to Bowe's Irvin and Charles's Emmitt than be the next Tony Gonzalez...

(We'll just steer clear of the Aikman/Cassel comparison for now)

I still remember all too well Popson's *stellar* performance during the Denver playoff game, the capstone of which was his world-class inability to get the **** out of bounds late in the game. Twice. Thanks, Ted!
