2010 Kansas City Royals Repository thread

All Royals All The Time!

After consultation with others who peruse the game threads we decided to create this as a repository for all things Royals. Minor league news, AL (ahem) Central (thanks Vonne) news and anything Royals can be found here.

alnorth, me and atleast 5 others will continue the game threads as usual. But if you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

If a big story breaks, you can still start a thread about it. There is merely an all inclusive thread that will make a easy for us all to keep up with all things Royals.

Welcome! "Grab a Brew... don't cost nuthin"...[spills beer on feet]

Royals To Sign Jeff Francis
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 14 at 8:35am CST]

The Royals have agreed to sign Jeff Francis to a one-year deal, according to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick (on Twitter). The agreement with the Frontline client is pending a physical.

Francis drew interest from at least seven teams this offseason before agreeing to sign in Kansas City.
That works. Francis has never been a great or even pretty good pitcher, but he's always been at least "OK", and we know by now that it isn't that easy to find "OK" pitchers.

Both sides get what they want.

We need someone to eat innings for a year to give our AA pitchers a chance to improve without being rushed up, but also not suck so bad that the fans boo and flee the stadium during his starts. He's inexpensive and the contract is heavily incentive-laden.

Francis needs a chance to prove that he's back after his shoulder surgery, and most contending teams wouldn't want to take a chance on him. He'll be playing hard for a good contract from someone in 2012.

Good move, IMO. All things being equal, I'd rather have a lefty innings-eater.

Any word on ChenNutz?

I would guess that signing Francis means Chen is gone. The way he was talking at the end of the season, you would think he'd won the CY

It's not going to be as much fun for Will Ferrell without Cy Chen around.

Hmm...I didn't read anything from him, but by Oct. I've generally been overexposed to Royals suck.

His statistical history suggests that Chen was a flash in the pan. His only other "good" year was in '05 with Baltimore, so it wouldn't be stupid to move on from him.

In other news, the Yankees made a rare stupid move today, throwing away almost $50MM (when you include the luxery tax they will incur for this) on a relief pitcher to setup Rivera. They also have to give up their first round pick to a division rival for said setup man, less than a week after their GM said he wouldn't do that.

3 years, over $11MM per year, and Soriano can opt out of either of the last two years. They gave up a 1st-rounder to sign that contract. This has almost no chance of working out. If he has a bad year, the Yankees are stuck paying a lot of money. If in the unlikely chance he somehow becomes worth more than $11MM, he can opt out of his contract and go to the highest bidder.

$2M base, up to an additional $2M in incentives for Francis according to Jerry Crasnick.

Not bad at all.

Its not like they have a great team but for a sagging pen and this deal puts them over the top to win a championship. If you think a deal might get you a pennant or trophy, you stop caring about getting equal value, you just do it and suffer the consequences later while wearing your championship T-shirt.

The Yankees already had a good bullpen, and now they probably have a terrific bullpen. They tossed a 1st-round pick and a lot of money to upgrade a strength. Never mind that their rotation is so shakey that this awesome bullpen might not get a ton of leads to save, their plan is to apparently score a lot of runs and cross their fingers that they can survive to the 8th inning.

This was a stupid, stupid move.

Agree completely.

I hope Pettitte retires and we're able to "help" the Yankees by trading a productive Francis at the deadline.

You look at our rotation now, and I can start to think (or fool myself, anyway) that our pitching wont be horrible next year. It wont be great, but our starters are beginning to look sort of respectable.

Our offense is still going to be God-awful and we'll lose a lot of games due to that in 2011, but if I have to see a losing team, watching the Royals lose a quick game 4-1 or 5-2 while missing a couple chances to come back is easier than watching us lose 9-2 where we are just utterly blown out by the 3rd inning.

WTF? Seriously, I see a bunch of #4/5 starters and Meche, who is more of a 3, at this point in his career. What am I missing?

I could be wrong, but I believe Meche is a bullpen arm, exclusively, now.
