Mess Cranking - three months of slavery to the anal-retentive lunatic cooks that every Navy enlisted man on a ship has to endure. The days started around 5:00 a.m. and ended around 10:30 p.m. God it was awful. I was also assigned to the wardroom, so I had to deal with the ****ing officers, and since I was assigned to a supply ship, there was an overabundance of supply corps officers. On the chain of pure scum, a naval supply corps officer falls somewhere between child molester and ax murderer. I can't think of a single one I ever met that didn't completely suck. Endless cleaning, mopping, serving food to those pampered dirtbags - imagine working at a restaurant in some country club for less than minimum wage with no tips, serving people utterly wrapped up in their own sense of self-entitlement. ****.
Us unfortunate few of the wardroom staff were also responsible for maintaining the decks in officers country. I'll never forget the night I had just finished waxing an area of the deck around 11:00 p.m., when this prick LTJG came by. He saw the wax wasn't dry, and could have easily walked around, but instead he deliberately walked through it, looked at me and laughed, and then went on to his cabin. I still want to kill that ****er, 26 years later. And there are a handful of others I'd just like to beat into a coma. Is that wrong? I don't care. To this day I'll never walk through a freshly mopped area of floor unless I have no choice, and then I'll profusely apologize to whoever is doing it. And I have the utmost appreciation for restaurant workers. The only good part - the zeroes got the best food, and we got to eat what they ate. Certainly didn't make up for it, though. Longest three months of my life. |

I've done odd day jobs from time to time that have really sucked. Bucking square bales is just exhausting. Building fence is miserable.
I worked maintenance at a golf course for a couple of summers. Weedeated half the known surface of the earth, raked bunkers by hand, emptied trash bins that consisted of nothing but Bud Light cans filled up with two ounces of chaw spit. Laid sod (****, that is a hell of a workout). The worst was when an irrigation line broke right by a tee box next to a pond and we had to jump into the water to fix it Came out with about six leeches on me. I got free golf for the deal, but I never wanted to do anything other than go home, sit down to pee, and go to bed. I was too tired to jerk off, which is saying a lot when you are 16.

Well, there was no back-breaking labor involved, I guess that's the only positive compared with some of the other jobs mentioned. That bucking hay bales shit sounds far worse, especially considering midwest summer heat and humidity. But at least you're probably working for/with good people.

And maybe the worst of all was clearing out the stalls that went both inside and out. There would literally be feet of straw, hay, mud, and manure that had been packed down by horse feet for years. Every so often, we'd clear it all out and lay fresh gravel at the bottom. You would chip at it with a shovel and put it in a wheelbarrow. You'd want to fill the wheelbarrow as much as you could because you wanted to make fewer trips to the pile out back, but if you filled the wheelbarrow too full and hit a board or something, or went down an incline too fast, the wheelbarrow would tip over and spill everything out. |

Yeah, haybaling was how the local hillbillies got in shape for football (I like to killed one of our gymnastics stars who had muscles galore but couldn't keep up with our bunch of farmboys. Now I couldn't whirl around on the high bar like him - but then, I had no desire to). If you had to clean stalls all day every day you could get pretty strong if you didn't just kill yourself. Shoveling shit is low on my wish list.

Bailing hay is ****ing terrible.....but it would keep you in shape I guess.
I had to bail hay on a weekend out at my old grandparents farm with my dad and a few others.....just a horrible day for a teenager. |
