I'm going to Vegas, baby!

OK, just got done booking a trip to Vegas in April. This will be my first time. Actually it will be my first real vacation ever. I have a few weeks to plan and I want to see as much stuff as possible.

Hit me with your recommendations. I want to know what places I need to visit, restaurants can't be missed, sights I should see. Trying to keep a budget so dropping big money on a bunch of shows isn't really my thing. I might gamble a little but I'm not big on gambling. I will be looking for photo spots though. I will be bringing my camera and taking a ton of pictures.

So what do you think, Planet? What do I need to see in VEGAS?

EDIT: Here's the link to the pics: http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showp...&postcount=106

Thanks everybody!

Bring comfortable walking shoes. The strip doesn't look big on maps and in pictures, but it's pretty big. You will do a TON of walking.

I seriously know nothing about Vegas, the names of the casinos, that's about it. I don't know which ones are supposed to be the good ones.

What's Fremont, is that a street, or an establishment, or what? You may have to use small words with me here.
Fremont Street is the area near downtown...it's the "old Vegas." It's cheaper, not as nice, and not as big as the strip.

Not as nice? Have you seen the shark tank at the Golden Nugget?

Woah you are staying at Luxor? That is WAAAAY down at the south end of the strip. It's a long hike to the middle of the strip (near caesar's, etc.) I stayed at the MGM once and that felt like forever, but Luxor is even farther away. I reiterate my above post about taking comfortable shoes.

OK, cool. I am also trying to get a feel for which casinos are most worth seeing.

I don't feel like dropping a ton at the tables. When my old roommate used to go to the boats, I would spend $50 at Pai Gow or video poker and see how long I could milk it. If they had $1 tables or something I'd probably play something awhile for fun.

They have $1 tables at Slots of Fun by Circus Circus. But that's a long way away from the Luxor. They have $5 tables downtown everywhere but the Nugget.

How many hours is it? I REALLY want to see the Grand Canyon but we're only there 4 days, it may not be enough time for a long car trip.

Yeah, I was being smartass. I love downtown because there are fewer people and it's cheaper to do about everything. Ironically, I've never stayed downtown.

Maybe on like a Tuesday morning at 7 a.m. somewhere would have $1 tables. The cheapest I saw when I was at MGM was $5 roulette on Monday morning.

Try Fremont Street for some cheaper tables...or maybe some of the older casinos like Imperial Palace or something.

Does anyone know if Sahara is closed down yet?

Hit the Peppermill or Hash House for breakfast.

The Peppermill is right up by the Riviera and the Hash House is inside the Imperial Palace.

Also downtown is pretty cool with the Fremont Street Experience.

That's all i got. When I go to Vegas all I do is eat breakfast, gamble, and get wasted.

Have fun

They have a place like that at the Dallas aquarium, a big shark tank except you walk through the middle of it.

That's the thing though, I'd like to see cool things off the beaten path and not the tourist traps with a ton of people.

It's not so bad if you aren't trying to do stuff on Friday night through Sunday afternoon.

You should try to check out that pawn shop from the TV show Pawn Stars.

4 hours, 49 minutes according to Google Maps. That's the south rim. The north rim is an hour further.

In all seriousness, if you haven't been there, get up really early one morning and make the drive. It's beyond spectacular. It's almost unbelievable. Even if you only stay two or three hours, you could get the feel and it makes for one long day.
