Phone comparison questions

My Blackberry is quitting

I am looking at an iPhone or HTC Thunderbolt. I don't really know which to choose. I've looked through the app stores of both Droid and Apple, and they have comparable apps for what I would be looking for.

I also read JOhn's thread here.

A few specific questions I have
  • When does the Iphone 5 come out?
  • How will battery life compare between Iphone and HTC Thunderbolt?
  • Will there be any issues with either phone synching to Outlook?
  • Which phone is more durable (I understand the thunderbolt is pretty new)
  • Is there any discernible difference in touch screen sensitivity or use?

My primary needs are durability, battery life, and signal strength (I live in the ****ing boonies).

Has anything changed since JOhn's thread? Is there anything else I should consider other than the typical "APPLE ROCKS"/"**** APPLE" arguments?

TIA.

Sweet thanks for the info...

We currently use Buehlers exchange server on our iphones... it was extremely easy to configure. I havent used the Thunderbolt yet, but if they get them, I am sure Old Man Buehler will be ringing my phone for help..

"Sprint will fight this attempt by AT&T to undo the progress of the past 25 years and create a new Ma Bell duopoly," said Vonya McCann, Sprint's senior vice president of government affairs.

Sprint already faces tough competition from its two bigger rivals, AT&T and Verizon Wireless, a venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group Plc. The combination of AT&T and T-Mobile USA, the No. 4 U.S. operator, would leapfrog Verizon Wireless as market leader.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission and the Justice Department are expected to take at least a year to review the proposed merger. (Reporting by Jasmin Melvin; Editing by Tim Dobbyn)

Droids will allow tethering? I'm not sure Verizon is real cool with that. They're pretty proud of that little receiver they sell. If there's a work around, this guy is interested. My tractor could use some laptopage.
Both the Thunderbolt and the iPhone will allow tethering. But it gets complicated after that. Both Verizon and AT&T would like to charge you an extra $20/month to tether. But both the Thunderbolt and the iPhone can be rooted/jailbroken to allow for free tethering and wifi hotspots.

Yeah, but I think the DOJ could tell GE, AT&T, and GM apart by the taste of their CEO's man-parts. I don't see any way the current administration blocks the deal. AT&T employs too many union people. I really hope I'm wrong.

I bought my kid one of these, she has 300 mins talk (she never uses) + unlimited text and data (which is alot of data for an android) for 25 bucks a month....

Not trying to push something on the guy that has no coverage with VM but if you got a kid and have service, this is the plan, they can't go over on anything, if they use all their talk mins up for the month you just can't call anymore until you renew your plan the nest month but the data and text all still work.

I considered the Virgin $25 plan. My issues were: the phones sucked, the range was pretty limited compared to the contract companies, and there is no 4g.

If you can get and need 4G then that's cool but 4g is in very limited places.
If you need or have to have the latest and greatest phone, a prepaid carrier is probably not going to make you happy.

I use the E71 Nokia on Straight talk , it is a gsm phone that runs on ATT towers, some straight talk phones run on Verizon but I drive 2000+ miles per week and I drop virtually the same places I dropped when I had a contract phone from Verizon for 45 bucks a month unlimited everything.

Yea I get a corporate Fedex discount of 22% thru Verizon but it's still cheaper to go with Straight talk.If the company was paying my bill, I would get an Iphone and a Verizon plan though.

I was a android user for 2 years having had a original droid and then the droid incredible. In the beginning I loved both phones. But I had major league glitches with both. I would get a ton of force closes on apps and most worked great but definitely not all of the time. The proximity sensor on both phones went out after about 6 months of use, or at least got real glitchy. The advantade for me with android is that it is non-tethered to iTunes. I got a iPhone about a month ago. I was fairly use to the iOS platform since I have an iPad. I really love this phone. I have the Verizon version so I can't talk and surf at the same time but I could care less about that. All of the apps so far have worked flawlessly and I haven't had any apps freeze up. I got it knowing a new iPhone was probably on the horizon, but Verizon is suppose to be ending unlimited data plans this summer so I am hoping to get grandfathered in with this phone or at the bare minimum being able to keep unlimited til my contract is up. Long story short I like the iOS software better than android. Open platform is cool but inherent glitches are not.

This is a pretty good point regarding both. Apps are pretty much equal on both phones, but the quality and stability of those apps are still varied on their respective platforms. iPhone apps must go through a Naziesque performance requirement test before being admitted into the App store. I'm not a huge fan of the stringent approval process, but it does ensure stability and performance for iOS apps. Android is much more lax in this regard, and they allow developers much more freedom in development. Which is why we've seen Malware issues targeting Android already. If you take the time to tweak your Android device, this issue can be eliminated pretty easily on Android. But it's still a consideration.

I've had the exact opposite experience with the iPhone/Droid. My Droid 1 never has issues and the iPhones I used to have to develop on were non-stop problems.

However the whole "plug it into my computer to sync" thing is a deal breaker. There's this new thing called the Internet, Apple doesn't seem to have heard of it.
